Whites Creek brings together a distinctive valley landscape, a historic district, and destinations such as the Whites Creek Greenway at Fontanel and Zip Up Fontanel. When choosing a destination, your personal interests may be the deciding factor: Would you like to explore architectural history, are you interested in nature and trails, or would you like to learn more about a zipline activity? The area offers different points of interest and presents Whites Creek as a destination with a rural landscape and historic architecture.

Landscape and Whites Creek Greenway

The Whites Creek Historic District lies in a valley landscape with steep, wooded slopes and a gently rolling valley where tributaries of Whites Creek converge. The Whites Creek Greenway at Fontanel is 1.5 miles long and is located at the center of a historic district with a rural character. In Nashville’s Greenway system, Whites Creek is one of eight major waterway corridors where Greenways are primarily located. The section of the Whites Creek Greenway from Mullins Park to Hartman Park includes a Greenway loop in Mullins Park. The landscape is shaped by the valley and its tributaries; for the trails, however, length and the section they cover are key considerations.

A Metro notice, last updated on August 31, 2026, reported a bridge closure on the Whites Creek Greenway due to repair work. Check the bridge status before your visit.

Historic buildings and architectural styles

The Whites Creek Historic District includes 23 buildings with a rural character, dating from the 1830s through the 1950s. Its significance lies in agriculture, settlement, and architecture. The architectural styles range from vernacular farmhouses and Italianate cottages to turn-of-the-century styles and Colonial Revival, as well as bungalows and English cottages.

The Yarbrough House dates to around 1835 and was probably built as an inn. The dating of the Bysor-Thompson House is less certain: It may date to the 1830s and is a large example of Tennessee vernacular architecture. Differences in scale and materials can be seen in commercial buildings: the Whites Creek Bank and Trust Company dates to 1911 and is a one-story limestone commercial building; the Whites Creek General Store dates to 1926 and is a two-story brick building in the Four Square style. Thompson's Country Maid Dairy operated until the 1950s. New Heaton Station was located on what was then Eaton Creek, in what is now the Whites Creek area.

Fontanel Mansion and local production

Fontanel Mansion also offers a distinctive connection to the region’s history: it is the former estate of country music legend Barbara Mandrell. The mansion sits on more than 100 acres of wooded land in Tennessee. The estate includes a creek and two ponds with a waterfall. Zip Up Fontanel is located at historic Fontanel Mansion, at 4225 Whites Creek Pike. The zipline course is suitable for all experience levels.

The Nashville Distillery is located at 4105 Whites Creek Pike in Whites Creek, Tennessee, and produces small batches of whiskey, bourbon, and vodka. This brings contemporary production in Whites Creek into focus alongside its historical themes.
