Discover Redfield: History, Parks and Lake Redfield
Accommodation in Redfield
Redfield brings together historic buildings, collections and recreational opportunities, offering different focal points for a stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Redfield, you can consider whether you’re more interested in the history of Spink County, railroads and architecture, activities in the parks, or the lakeside surroundings. The following places offer specific ways to explore these interests.
History and collections
The Spink County Museum preserves the history of Spink County. Its exhibits include musical instruments, agricultural equipment and military uniforms, as well as early sites in Spink County and Hindersman cabinets with secret compartments. Individual exhibits may change over time.
Buildings in Redfield
Old Redfield City Hall is historically significant because of its longstanding ties to Redfield’s administrative and economic life. The Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad Depot in Redfield was built in 1914, modeled after a station in Chicago, and dedicated on October 23, 1914. The construction year and dedication date mark two separate steps in its history: the year indicates when it was built, while October 23 is the specific dedication date. The depot houses railroad items, model trains, locomotives and artifacts from the early years of the railroad. Unlike City Hall, which is associated with administrative and economic life, the depot combines architectural history with a railroad collection. The depot visitor center is listed as open May 1 to December 30 (Tue.–Sat., 10 a.m.–4 p.m.); check in advance whether these hours are still current.
First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield is also a historic architectural landmark. Rainbow Bridge crosses Turtle Creek on 3rd Street West in Redfield.
Parks, trails and water
If you’re planning outdoor activities, Redfield has a recreational trail. Packard / Redfield City Park has a walking and biking trail as well as a disc golf course. Redfield City Park also has playground equipment, a softball field and a municipal swimming pool. This gives you a choice of trails, disc golf, and playground and sports facilities.
Lake Redfield lies on the western edge of Redfield. A floating fishing pier at Redfield Lake is managed by the City of Redfield. If you’re interested in fishing, the pier is a specific place to check out. Check its current condition before your visit.
Library and seasonal offering
Redfield Carnegie Library is the oldest Carnegie library in South Dakota still in continuous use as a library. From September to May, it offers a storytime session; you can sign up in person or by phone.
