Hutchinson County is characterized by a largely open, generally relatively flat landscape. The terrain becomes hillier along the James River and larger streams. Grassland and shrubland are concentrated mainly along the James River and its tributaries. Silver Lake is also part of the landscape: the lake formed naturally. Open areas and stretches along the water thus offer contrasting aspects of the landscape.

Landscape and routes through the region

U.S. Highway 81 is one of the county’s main routes. This is especially helpful for planning your trip if you want to include different interests in your stay, such as nature, regional history, or events.

Events in Menno

The Menno Pioneer Power Show is a two-day annual event in Menno. It takes place on the third weekend after Labor Day weekend and features demonstrations of southeastern South Dakota’s heritage on a 36-acre site. The event thus combines a set weekend in the annual calendar with a program focused on regional history and demonstrations. If you want to plan your stay around it, check the event dates before traveling.

The Mettler Barn is also part of the show: during the annual event, its ground floor is used as a dining hall, while the hayloft serves as exhibition space. The two areas therefore have different functions within the event. Together, the Menno Pioneer Power Show and the use of the barn offer a glimpse of the cultural heritage at the heart of this event.

Museums and history in Freeman

The Freeman Museum & Archives displays more than 20,000 objects and South Dakota’s largest privately operated exhibition of artifacts of Indigenous peoples of the Plains. The museum also includes several historic buildings: an 1879 pioneer home, a reconstructed summer kitchen, a 1902 rural schoolhouse, and two rural churches. The collection and buildings offer different ways to explore history—from objects on display to preserved examples of rural architecture.

The Heritage Hall Museum & Archives in Freeman focuses on the history of Germans from Russia who immigrated to the Dakota Territory in the southeast beginning in the 1870s. Schmeckfest has been held annually in Freeman since 1959. Its program includes food sales, craft demonstrations, fine art, a buffet, historical presentations, food preparation demonstrations, and a musical performed by community members.

The South Dakota Chislic Festival offers another culinary and cultural theme. It takes place at the Prairie Arboretum in Freeman and began in 2018 with the goal of promoting Freeman and the wider Chislic Circle through the region’s food and cultural heritage tradition. Schmeckfest and the Chislic Festival thus offer different focuses: one combines several program elements in an annual event that has been held for decades, while the other highlights the regional Chislic tradition.

Activities and local information

Fishing, swimming, picnicking, and boating are available at Tripp Lake. In Parkston, East Park has basketball and tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, and a public swimming pool. Parkston Public Pool has a pool lift for people with limited mobility. These offerings are quite different: activities on the water are the focus at Tripp Lake, while East Park brings together a range of sports and recreational options.

Check the visitor conditions for historic sites. Schmidt House is closed to the public because of structural problems. The Preszler House, also known as the Oswald Shoe Shop, can be visited by appointment arranged by phone. Pioneer Acres offers a tour by prior appointment. Check these conditions when planning your visit, and make arrangements if a visit is by request.

Getting there and planning your trip

The only airport in Hutchinson County is just south of Parkston. It has an asphalt runway that was extended to accommodate small jets. Check event dates and observe the stated appointment requirements when planning visits.
