Sumter combines nature experiences with historic sites, art, and recreational activities. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first consider what will shape your trip: Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the city’s history, or a particular recreational activity. The distinctive features of each place can give you concrete points of reference.

Nature and trails at Swan Lake Iris Gardens

Swan Lake Iris Gardens covers 150 acres. It is the only public park in the United States that is home to all eight species of swans. There are also more than 120 varieties of iris. The combination of swan species and irises makes the gardens a distinctive nature-focused destination for your trip to Sumter.

A sensory trail allows visitors with visual impairments to experience the gardens through scents and sensory impressions. For walks, there is a 1.30-mile network of trails rated easy. Sections of asphalt, sand, grass, and boardwalks provide a variety of surfaces. Check trail conditions before your trip.

Historic sites and art

The history of the Sumter Opera House spans two phases of construction: the first opera house was destroyed by fire in December 1892. The building in its present form was constructed from 1893 to 1895. The Sumter Opera House is preparing for its grand reopening after closing for renovations in June 2025. Check its reopening status before planning a visit.

The Williams Brice House is an Edwardian house built in 1916. It represents Sumter’s architectural heritage and community life in the early 20th century. The Carolina Backcountry Homestead illustrates life on a family farm in the Sumter Backcountry around 1800 through its historic buildings. The region was known as the “Backcountry” from 1750 to 1850; this period provides historical context for the way of life portrayed.

The Sumter County Gallery of Art features rotating exhibitions of traditional and contemporary art. Works by locally, regionally, and nationally recognized artists are on display. The exhibitions add a distinct art focus to the historic sites.

Recreational activities and events

The Palmetto Tennis Center has 24 state-of-the-art tennis courts with lighting for night play. The City of Sumter Aquatics Center offers family swim sessions, exercise classes, lifeguard training, and swimming lessons. These options cater to different interests: tennis, water activities, and classes.

The Iris Festival is a three-day festival held in May. The program includes concerts, arts and crafts, pageants, plants and flowers, and numerous activities for children. Specific event dates are confirmed annually, so check the dates for your travel year.

The region also offers options for longer hikes: trailheads in Sumter provide access to the Wateree Passage of the 380-mile Palmetto Trail. Swan Lake Iris Gardens, by contrast, has its own 1.30-mile network of trails. This lets you choose between a local walk and access to a longer trail when planning your trip.
