Darlington offers five nationally recognized historic districts to explore. Three of them showcase different aspects of architectural history: homes in a range of styles, commercial buildings connected to the city’s growth, and distinctive wooden houses with decorative details. There are also places focused on theatrical history, regional culture, and NASCAR.

Historic Districts and Their Architecture

The Cashua Street–Spring Street District encompasses well-preserved homes dating from 1890 to 1930. Architectural styles include Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow. In contrast, the historic Darlington Downtown district includes 21 well-preserved commercial buildings that contribute to the district. They are associated with the city’s growth between 1870 and 1935.

The West Broad Street District is also characterized by homes. Its well-preserved buildings date from 1890 to 1928. They include large, two-story wood-frame houses in the Victorian or Queen Anne style, with decorative woodwork. Comparing it with Cashua Street–Spring Street reveals both shared architectural forms and distinctive features: both districts include homes from similar periods, while West Broad Street stands out particularly for the large wooden houses described here. The commercial buildings downtown offer a different view of Darlington: they are connected to the city’s development.

Theater, Museums, and NASCAR History

The Dargan Memorial Amphitheater brings architecture and landscape together. The Greek-style outdoor theater opened on May 1, 1925, and is situated on a natural hillside on the banks of Swift Creek. The J.C. Daniel Auditorium was renovated and renamed the J.C. Daniel Center for Performing Arts; it is now part of the St. John's Heritage Foundation. The monthly programs of the Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum offer another way to explore local history, with opportunities for hands-on learning and local tours.

Two institutions at Darlington Raceway are dedicated to stock car racing. The National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame features photographs, memorabilia, and interactive exhibits about NASCAR. The Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum explores the origins and history of stock car racing. At the NASCAR Racing Experience, you can choose to drive an actual NASCAR race car yourself or take a high-speed ride as a passenger. Availability depends on the date, so check the schedule for your intended stay.

The Hartsville Museum features exhibits on local history and art. It is housed in a 1930s post office building, whose stained-glass skylight features depictions of the flora and fauna significant to the region. The Lawhon History Gallery explores artifacts and their history in connection with Hartsville, the Pee-Dee region, and South Carolina. The museum also offers group tours that can be scheduled, as well as hands-on tours for children about Indigenous peoples, cotton, and early 20th-century food.

Gardens, Trails, and Outdoor Activities

Kalmia Gardens is a 38-acre public garden with a historic home on the grounds of a former 19th-century plantation. The trail network at Kalmia Gardens runs along Black Creek and leads into the Segars-McKinnon Heritage Preserve. Along the trails in the Segars-McKinnon Heritage Preserve, visitors may spot birds, snakes, and turtles.

Lawton Park covers 3.5 acres on the shores of Prestwood Lake. Facilities include tennis courts, a boardwalk, a pier, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and restrooms. Activities along the Born Learning Trail at Byerly Park follow the running and walking path. They help children develop language skills, literacy, and school readiness. The Neptune Island Waterpark includes Piratesville Splashpad. Golf enthusiasts can visit the Darlington Country Club, which has an 18-hole golf course on Black Creek.

Planning Your Stay

For planning purposes, the destinations can be clearly distinguished by location: Darlington is the focus for historic districts, architecture, and NASCAR. The previously mentioned destinations in Hartsville and the wider region are separate; they add museums, cultural history, nature, and outdoor activities to the options. Downtown Darlington is about a 10-minute drive from Exit 164 on I-95 and U.S. 52. This approximate travel time offers a practical guide for your arrival; if you plan to visit the NASCAR Racing Experience, also check the date-dependent schedule.
