Moncks Corner: History and Nature
Accommodation in Moncks Corner
Moncks Corner can be explored through its history and landscape in different ways: the town’s history stretches from a crossroads settlement to events of the American Revolutionary War, while historic institutions and park trails offer other perspectives. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between them: the museum and Interpretive Center present history; boardwalks, gravel trails, and a canoe trail offer different ways to experience the landscape.
Local History and Heritage
In the 18th century, Moncks Corner was a crossroads settlement with shops and taverns at the intersection of the Cherokee Path, a trail used by Indigenous traders, and the road from Charleston to Santee. Moncks Corner’s historic roots are also connected to the arrival of French Huguenots in the early 18th century. During the American Revolutionary War, the village served as a British supply depot. Fort Fair Lawn is an intact original fortification from the Revolutionary War and is associated with military events in Moncks Corner. Mepkin Abbey offers another historical perspective: founded in 1949, the community of Roman Catholic monks is located on the grounds of the historic Mepkin Plantation.
These historical connections take different forms: the crossroads point to trade and the town’s development, while the supply depot reflects the village’s role in the war. Fort Fair Lawn adds an intact original fortification to this history. Historical developments thus stand alongside a tangible architectural testament.
