A trip to Bristol County can be planned around coastal paths, gardens and maritime history. Each destination offers something different: Colt State Park combines coastal scenery with trails, while historic estates and Bristol offer insights into garden culture and seafaring. When planning, it’s worth distinguishing between a longer route, scenic experiences and the historic sites in Bristol.

Coast and Trails

One standout natural destination in the East Bay area of Bristol County is Colt State Park. Its 464 acres include lawns, four miles of paved paths, hiking trails, historic stone walls and a spectacular coastline. The park’s bike paths intersect with the East Bay Bike Path. This runs 14.5 miles from Bristol to Providence and is suitable for cycling, walking and jogging along the coast. The park therefore offers both paved paths and hiking trails, as well as a longer coastal route that supports several activities.

Bristol and the Scenic Byway

The Revolutionary Heritage Byway is a six-mile National Scenic Byway through Bristol. It passes through the historic downtown, by waterfront parks and to harbor viewpoints. Compared with the 14.5-mile East Bay Bike Path, the byway is shorter and focuses more on the places and harbor views along the route; the bike path connects Bristol with Providence. The two routes therefore offer different scales for trip planning: one through the town and a longer connection along the coast.

Estates and Garden Culture

Mount Hope Farm is a 127-acre estate on the shore of Mount Hope Bay. Its gardens, grounds and walking paths are open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., except during private events. Check the latest access information before your visit. Blithewold is a 33-acre summer estate with expansive views of Narragansett Bay. Framed by gardens, the mansion has 45 rooms; the gardens are examples of early 20th-century American landscape design. The acreage clearly distinguishes the two estates, while Blithewold also stands out for its mansion and garden history.

Historic and Maritime Heritage

The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society is housed in a jail building built in 1828, which is used as a museum and library. The library contains more than 1,800 books and documents of local and regional historical interest. This brings together an unusual type of building and a collection whose subject matter extends beyond Bristol. The America’s Cup Hall of Fame honors people who have made outstanding contributions to sailing’s most prestigious competition. Bristol’s Annual Fourth of July Celebration also has a long history: it was founded in 1785. If you’d like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the specific event dates.

Natural History and Practical Planning

The Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium complements the nature and history themes with a natural history museum featuring interactive exhibits about Rhode Island’s habitats and wildlife. To catch a ferry, you can buy tickets and make reservations at the Prudence & Bay Islands Transport ferry office in Bristol 30 minutes before each departure. Check the departure information before your trip.
