New Freedom combines railway history with practical ways to experience the area. New Freedom is the Northern Central Railway of York’s main depot; the station is also one of three historic structures in Heritage Rail Trail County Park. Railway history and architectural heritage are therefore at the heart of the area. For your planning, the schedule of the offered train ride, the station building and other outdoor activities in the borough are of particular interest. Depending on whether you prefer a round trip, local history or outdoor activity, these themes offer different highlights.

Round Trip and Locomotives

The New Freedom Flyer is a five-hour round trip departing from Hanover Junction Station, with a two-hour stop in New Freedom. For planning purposes, these are two different figures: five hours for the entire round trip and two hours for the stop. The two-hour period is therefore spent in New Freedom. If the Flyer suits your trip, allow for both time periods; the details of the round trip may change. Check the Railway’s current schedule before your visit.

The Northern Central Railway offers passengers a replica of a steam locomotive from the American Civil War era as well as a diesel locomotive from the mid-20th century. This presents two different types of locomotives with distinctly different historical contexts. If you are interested in railways, you can take this contrast in eras into account. As the locomotive offerings may change, check the current schedule before your trip.

Station, History and Museum

New Freedom’s original station building was reconstructed in 2003. The station is also one of three historic structures in Heritage Rail Trail County Park. The year refers to the reconstruction of the original building; its designation within the county park places the station in its broader historical context.

The Heritage Museum of New Freedom is located at 22 Railroad Avenue, overlooking the Heritage Rail Trail between Franklin Street and Main Street. The address and street names provide specific reference points when locating the museum on a map of the area. The station and museum are two separate places to explore New Freedom’s history: at the station, the focus is on the reconstructed building; at the museum, it is on its own location along the trail.

Parks and Practical Information

There is also a range of parks beyond the railway-related attractions: the Borough of New Freedom manages eight parks covering a total of about 58 acres. They include sports fields, walking trails, playgrounds and pavilions. The acreage refers to the parks combined. The different facilities cater to a range of interests, from walking trails to recreational and sports activities.

If you are traveling by car, the size of the station parking lot is another specific planning point: it has about 40 spaces. The figure is approximate, and parking information may be revised. If you plan to use the lot, check the latest information.
