Historic Sites and Their Place in History
The Coudersport Historic District comprises 73 contributing buildings and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on February 24, 1975. Another historic landmark is the Coudersport and Port Allegany Railroad Station, also known as the Coudersport Depot. Built in 1899, it opened in January 1900 and was added to the same register on November 21, 1976.
When considering these dates, it’s worth distinguishing between a building’s construction date and its listing date: the Scottish Rite Consistory in Coudersport was built in 1889 and still stands today. The train station was built later and was listed in 1976. The Historic District was listed in 1975. The Potter County Courthouse in Coudersport is also listed, in the National Register of Historic Buildings. Together, these landmarks and their respective dates offer a way to understand the town’s history.
Museums: Glass, County History and Eliot Ness
The museum of the Potter County Historical Society in Coudersport displays antiques and artifacts that tell the story of Potter County’s rich heritage. Examples of Coudersport Glass are also on display. Alongside the historic buildings, these collections and examples of regional glass provide another way to explore the area’s history.
The Eliot Ness Museum in Coudersport covers a different subject: its exhibits and presentations celebrate the life and experiences of the famous lawman Eliot Ness. Visits require an appointment, which can be made by phone, text message or online booking; admission is also charged. If you plan to visit the museum, make an appointment in advance and check the latest visitor and admission information.
Parks and Recreation
CARP Park has a playground, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. Mitchell Park also has a playground and horseshoe pits, as well as bocce courts. You’ll need to bring your own equipment to play bocce. The two park descriptions highlight different opportunities for outdoor recreation, from playground visits to a variety of sports and throwing games.
The borough’s parks are open from 9:00 a.m. until dusk. Park facilities and hours may change, so check the latest information before your visit. When planning, keep museum requirements and park hours in mind separately: the Eliot Ness Museum requires an appointment, while the stated hours apply to park visits.
