Lawrence County: Outdoor Experiences, Culture and Amish Heritage
Accommodation in Lawrence County
Lawrence County combines outdoor activities, cultural experiences and authentic Amish heritage. Highlights range from Slippery Rock Creek Gorge and recreational trails to museums and historical tours, as well as rural Amish culture and food and drink destinations. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether scenery, history, motorized recreation or regional culture will shape your stay.
Scenery, Trails and Recreation
McConnells Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, which is designated a National Natural Landmark. Visitors can also see a historic gristmill and a covered bridge built in the 19th century in the park. The scenery and historic structures offer different ways to experience the same state park.
Quaker Falls Recreation Area is open again. Since this status may change, check before you arrive. For a different kind of outdoor activity, Mines & Meadows in Wampum offers more than 84 miles of recreational trails on a 877-acre site for ATV and dirt bike riders. Rides through abandoned underground limestone mines are also offered there. This clearly distinguishes the motorized activities from a visit to the historic sites at McConnells Mill State Park.
The North Country Trail passes through Wampum, which is one of the NCTA Trail Towns; the trail crosses Main Street there. Irons Mill Farmstead offers its own outdoor focus: the site has more than 40 outdoor attractions and also features a Candy Cannon.
Local Museums and History
The Lawrence County Historical Society Museum houses an extensive archival collection on Shenango China, considered one of the largest in the world. The “Freedom Fighters” tour through New Castle’s North Hill Historic District offers a different way to explore regional history. It tells the stories of city residents who championed American civil liberties and worked to improve access to freedom and equality.
Advance registration is required for tours of the Clavelli Cultural Heritage Center; they take place by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Confirm your appointment before you arrive. At the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum, the main tour focuses on the history of the Warner family and includes a short film at the Cascade Theatre. The museum regularly welcomes women’s, men’s and school groups for tours.
Amish Culture and Local Food and Drink Destinations
Lawrence County is home to the second-largest Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania and the twelfth-largest in the United States. Visitors can learn about Amish life on guided tours or by following a self-guided driving route through the rural area. These options differ in format: you can choose a guided tour or explore the driving route independently.
Volant offers shops, restaurants, wineries and a distillery along an old-fashioned Main Street in the rural Amish region of western Pennsylvania. In a small red barn, Amish women make fresh Amish doughnuts there every other Saturday and on event days. Nova Destinations brings together six winery, brewery and distillery locations in the county. Check individual offerings before you arrive.
