Get to know Ithan through its historic sites and the natural surroundings nearby. Christ Church Ithan, Ithan Store, and Radnor Friends Meeting House offer glimpses into different chapters: church architecture, the history of the early community, and the development of Radnorville into present-day Ithan. Ithan Valley Park adds a hiking trail, a natural area, and fishing. If you are considering Ithan as a travel destination, these highlights can help you decide whether your interests lie in local history, religious architecture, or nature.

Radnorville and the Name Ithan

The first post office at the present-day site of Ithan was called Radnorville. The settlement developed around the meetinghouse; Radnorville remained the population center of Radnor Township for 200 years. Around 1850, the settlement's name was changed to Ithan because of concerns it could be confused with Radnor. The former place name and the reason for the change also help put Ithan in context.

Christ Church Ithan and Its Architecture

Christ Church Ithan stands on land once known as Ithan Farms. Theophilus Parsons Chandler designed and built the church in the English Gothic style. It was consecrated on All Saints' Day, November 1, 1919. Stained-glass windows depict the life of Jesus and the story of Saint Martin. The windows in the side aisle were designed and developed by Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia. Conestoga Road, where the church stands, was one of the first long-distance roads of the American colonial era. Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Christ Church Ithan thus offers several points of interest for a visit: its architectural style, stained-glass windows, local history, and a specific service time.

Ithan Store and Radnor Friends Meeting House

Ithan Store stands at the intersection of Conestoga Road and Radnor-Chester Road. It probably dates from the last quarter of the 17th century. For a long time, it was the center of the old Ithan settlement's community and the Radnor Friends' first place of prayer and worship, before their meetinghouse was built. Radnor Friends Meeting House marks a later chapter in this history: in early 1778, it served as quarters for officers and as a hospital for soldiers. In 1978, Radnor Friends Meetinghouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its early uses and later listing in the register reveal different chapters in the history of this meetinghouse.

Nature Nearby

Near the destination, Ithan Valley Park features a hiking trail and a natural area. Fishing is permitted there for all age groups. The park complements the area's history with two specific recreational options: hiking on the trail and fishing. When planning your trip, you can consider the historic sites and activities in the park as distinct areas of interest.
