Dayton Landing is located at the confluence of the Yamhill River and Palmer Creek. Together with natural areas, historic sites, and regional wine and beverage culture, this shapes the variety of travel experiences in Yamhill County.

Wine and Beverage Culture

The Wine Country Whiskey Trail includes six distilleries and six breweries in Yamhill County. The Yamhill-Carlton AVA offers a distinct, broader connection to the wine region: it has more than 50 wineries. This means two different themes stand side by side here—the county’s distilleries and breweries, and the AVA’s wine country.

Highways 240 and 47 are also useful for getting around the region. They provide access to most wineries and vineyards in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, as well as to the towns of Carlton and Yamhill. This makes it possible to include the wine region as a distinct focus in your travel plans without conflating it with the offerings of the Wine Country Whiskey Trail.

Parks, Forests, and Seasonal Blooms

Yamhill County’s park system includes 18 parks and natural areas covering a total of 272 acres. The developed parks offer opportunities for picnicking, boating, birdwatching, fishing, hiking, and environmental education. Each location has its own distinct landscape.

Charles Metsker Park provides access to Baker Creek and Rainbow Lake, surrounded by riparian forests and upland conifer forests. At Blackwell Park, Willamina Creek cascades over sculpted rock formations beside a river-rock beach. At Huber Park on Baker Creek, a secluded rocky beach sits along a remote stretch of river and is suitable for picnicking. At Menefee Park, a mature stand of western red cedars along Turner Creek provides a fitting setting for a secluded picnic.

One clear seasonal highlight is Deer Creek Prairie Park: each spring, its tallgrass prairie bursts into bloom with rare and common wildflowers. Those planning their trip around the blooms can make spring a distinct focus of their time in nature.

Rivers and Landings

The Yamhill River is navigable from Dayton Landing upstream to Lafayette Locks Historical Park. The park preserves the remains of locks that once allowed boats to travel on the Yamhill River as far as McMinnville. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Rogers Landing on the Willamette River has ample parking and a three-lane boat ramp. From the docks, visitors can watch herons, osprey, kingfishers, and migrating geese. Near the Wheatland Ferry, Ediger Landing provides access to a beach on the Willamette River and a boat ramp. Together, these places offer different ways to experience the rivers—from shipping history on the Yamhill River to birdwatching and boating access on the Willamette River.

Historic Sites and Museums

The Yamhill County History Museum complex includes more than 40,000 square feet of exhibit space dedicated to the county’s history. The Hutchcroft School, a one-room historic schoolhouse built in rural Yamhill, has also been relocated to the museum grounds. The Oregon or Bust program offers an 1880s-style lesson and a hands-on activity with an authentic historic character. Reservations are required; activities depend on the season, volunteers, and weather.

The Hoover-Minthorn House was built in 1881 and is the oldest surviving residence built in what is now Newberg, Oregon. It was home to Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, from 1885 to 1889. The historic building of the Chehalem Cultural Center was originally Central School, built in 1935.

Downtown McMinnville is designated a National Historic District. The city also offers the Stroll - Downtown McMinnville Walking Tour resource. In Newberg, the digital project Mapping Our History presents downtown with map layers covering historic land use, structures, events, and artifacts.

Aviation and aerospace history is also represented. The Hercules Pavilion at the North American Aerospace Museum features the Spruce Goose and aircraft from several eras, including biplanes, World War II aircraft, aerobatic planes, and Vietnam-era aircraft. The Titan Pavilion covers the early years of space exploration and the race to the Moon; it also features stealth aircraft, jet fighters, drones, and helicopters.
