Lincoln County on Oregon’s central coast is shaped by forests and rivers and borders the Pacific Ocean. Lincoln County includes several miles of beach and coastline. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area in Lincoln County is a basalt headland on Oregon’s central coast.

Beaches, Forests and Tidal Landscapes

At South Beach State Park, you’ll find several miles of broad, sandy ocean beach. The paved Jetty Trail is suitable for jogging and cycling. Several miles of ocean beach stretch through Lincoln County, and the day-use area at Beverly Beach State Park is just steps away. Beverly Beach State Park also has a forested campground along Spencer Creek.

At Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area, a cliff-lined beach meets wooden footbridges. The bridges pass through Sitka spruce, western hemlock, shore pine and alder. The area is well suited to birdwatching and exploring tide pools. Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge includes brackish marshes, tidal channels, mudflats, and coniferous and deciduous forest.

Whale Cove surrounds Oregon’s oldest marine reserve. Year-round, the cove serves as a resting and breeding area for more than 100 harbor seals. At Cascade Head, geology and views take center stage: the headland formed through the uplift of underwater basalt flows. From there, views extend over the ocean, the Salmon River Estuary and Lincoln City.

Tides, Whale Watching and On-the-Water Experiences

Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area combines distinctive coastal geology with whale watching and is considered a popular spot for it. Tide pools on the north side of the Punchbowl are accessible depending on the tides. The Whale Watching Center has a large viewing platform and provides visitors with binoculars. The focus differs at each place: here, the view from a platform takes center stage, while geology and tide pools shape the experience at Devils Punchbowl.

At Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center, an interactive simulator lets you experience steering a large research vessel through Yaquina Bay. Another interactive feature is a tide-pool touch tank with sea cucumbers, sea urchins and sea stars. Oregon Coast Aquarium offers encounters with 15,000 animals from 300 species; the animal collection may change.

There are several options for non-motorized boats. The free shoreline launch at Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge near Alder Island is intended for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and other non-motorized boats; use is limited to boats launched from a car roof. Knight Park has the only public boat landing on the Salmon River. From Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site, you can canoe and kayak on the relatively undeveloped Nestucca Bay estuary.

North Lincoln County Historical Museum serves as an educational resource on the history of North Lincoln County. Its exhibits include a display about Japanese glass fishing floats; exhibits may change. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check the hours before your visit. Toledo History Center preserves local history through photographs, oral histories, historical documents, newspapers, exhibits and community collections, among other resources. The museum of Yaquina Pacific Railroad Historical Society features “One Spot,” a 1922 Baldwin steam locomotive, as a prominent permanent exhibit.

Yaquina River Museum of Art focuses its exhibitions on art shaped by, or about, the landscape, people and industry of the Yaquina River region. The permanent collection is rotated twice a year for public viewing. Monthly “1st Weekend Art” exhibitions give Toledo artists an opportunity to participate; check the dates when planning. In Toledo, the self-guided Toledo Quest follows sidewalks and paved walking paths and takes about 45 minutes.

Practical Information for Your Trip

When planning, it’s worth distinguishing seasonal information from details tied to specific days and times: Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is open from March through November, while North Lincoln County Historical Museum lists specific days and hours. Confirm the hours before your visit. Toledo Quest also has an estimated duration; route details may change. About ten percent of the Oregon Coast Trail runs along U.S. 101 shoulders, county roads and city streets. Conditions and detours may change, so it’s a good idea to check route information before planning.
