Brookings: Coastal Scenery and Nature
Accommodation in Brookings
Coastal trails, wildlife-viewing opportunities and recurring events give your trip to Brookings different focuses. If you’re looking for a hotel in Brookings, distinguishing between them can help you plan: Would you like to focus on coastal scenery, include activities on the Chetco River, or plan your stay around an event?
Coast and Nature near Brookings
Harris Beach State Park features several trails, miles of sandy beaches and rocky coastal formations. The beach has picnic areas and views of the sea stacks offshore. Bird Island, also known as Goat Island, is located in Harris Beach State Park. The island is a National Wildlife Sanctuary and a nesting site for rare birds such as the tufted puffin. For birdwatchers, this makes it a place of particular natural significance, set against a striking coastal backdrop.
Capella by the Sea offers panoramic views of the Port of Brookings-Harbor, the Chetco River and the Pacific Ocean in a quiet, wooded setting. Its scenery differs from the beaches and rocks at Harris Beach: here, the focus is on sweeping views of the water and harbor.
Trails, Views and Activities on the Water
Chetco Point Park is a rocky peninsula in Brookings, just over two miles south of Harris Beach. From its rocky outcrops, visitors can spot local seals, the distant St. George’s Reef Lighthouse and, seasonally, whales. The park also has easy trails, scenic views, and access to the beach and tide pools. Amenities include parking, picnic tables, a paved path and restrooms.
The Chetco River offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, drift-boat trips, swimming and hiking. Near the river mouth, Brookings also has a boat launch, moorage, boat rentals and a charter boat service. If you’re planning to rent a boat or book a charter, check availability in advance.
Plan Around Seasonal Events
Brookings’ Azalea Festival takes place over Memorial Day weekend. The program includes a parade, a street market, a local community church service, free concerts, food and a car show. From May through October, the Second Saturday Artwalk takes visitors to various locations around Brookings. The American Music Festival adds free summer Sunday concerts at Azalea Park to the events calendar; the concert series runs from June through early September.
Azalea Park is also the setting for Nature’s Coastal Holiday, a light festival that runs from the day after Thanksgiving through December 26. The display features more than 3 million lights and over 300 illuminated sculptures across a four-acre area. Traditional and maritime themes, including marine life, feature along the route, which takes about 45 minutes to walk. If you’re visiting for a particular festival or concert, check the event date as you plan.
