Discover Clatsop: Coast, History and Nature
Accommodation in Clatsop
A view of the Columbia River from the Astoria Column, a walk through the rooms of a fort reconstruction and trails along the coast reveal different sides of Clatsop. Clatsop County borders the Columbia River to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Its defining themes include coastal parks, nature watching and maritime history. Astoria, Fort Clatsop, Ecola and Fort Stevens offer different ways to experience these themes.
Coastal Parks, Trails and Water
Fort Stevens State Park covers 4,300 acres. Activities in the park include beach walks, trails and wildlife watching; it also features a freshwater lake and a historic shipwreck. Coffenbury Lake in Fort Stevens State Park offers swimming, a boat ramp and a two-mile loop trail around the lake. The distance refers to this loop, not to the size of the entire park.
Ecola State Park stretches along nine miles of coastline between Seaside and Cannon Beach. Its trail network includes an eight-mile section of the Oregon Coast Trail. The two figures refer to different measurements: nine miles is the park’s coastal extent, while eight miles is the trail section. If you plan to hike there, check local trail conditions in advance, as they can change. Indian Beach has tide pools and is popular with surfers.
History and Views in Astoria
From December 1805 to March 1806, Fort Clatsop was the winter encampment of the Corps of Discovery. You can explore the reconstruction by walking through its rooms. The dates give the site a clear historical context; walking through the rooms offers a way to experience that history in its setting.
Visitors can climb to the top of the Astoria Column. Its observation deck offers panoramic views of the Columbia River and snow-capped volcanoes in the distance. A 525-foot-long mural surrounds the column.
The Columbia River Maritime Museum is designated Oregon’s official maritime museum. An interactive exhibit map of the “Graveyard of the Pacific” documents more than 200 large ships and 700 lives lost at sea. Visitors can also board the museum ship Lightship Columbia, which is designated a National Historic Landmark; access to the ship may be subject to operational restrictions.
More Experiences and Seasonal Planning
Seaside Aquarium is the oldest privately operated aquarium on the West Coast. For maritime history, the museum in Astoria offers a different focus: its exhibit map and museum ship turn the spotlight on ships and events at sea. These different themes can shape your choice of visits.
The Astoria Sunday Market takes place every Sunday from Mother’s Day through mid-October. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific market dates before your trip. The seasonal period helps you plan the market as a standalone activity for the right time of year.
Astoria in Clatsop County is about a two-hour drive from Portland. If you’re looking for hotels in Clatsop, choosing a clear focus for your trip can help with planning: coastal trails, historic sites, views or museums each lend themselves to different day plans.
