When planning a stay in Okmulgee, you can compare two distinct areas of interest: the city’s history in the Okmulgee Downtown Historic District and outdoor recreation in the surrounding area west of the city. Other points of interest range from the history of the Creek Nation Council House to market and recreational offerings. This gives you a way to decide whether the history of buildings and places or a specific recreational activity should shape your trip.

History on Two Scales

The Creek Nation Council House was originally built in 1868. After a fire destroyed the original building, it was rebuilt in stone in 1878. In 1923, the building was established as a museum and educational center for Native American history. The Creek Nation Council House has exhibits, new displays, and a gift shop. If any of these visitor offerings are important to your plans, check the latest visitor information in advance.

The Okmulgee Downtown Historic District covers several blocks, including the African American business district at 5th & 6th Streets. More than 140 buildings were nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places because of their architectural significance and importance to the city’s history. A nomination is not the same as confirmed listing. The Council House represents the history of a single building; the Historic District encompasses several blocks and the business district. This offers two distinct ways to explore local history: through a building’s construction and later use, or through the architecture and history of an entire district.

Recreation in the Area

West of the city, in the area near Okmulgee, is the Okmulgee & Dripping Springs Lake & Recreation Area. It has a 3.5-mile hiking trail, part of which is accessible in accordance with ADA standards. The fact that only part of the trail is accessible is important for planning: you should not assume the entire route is accessible. As trail conditions may change, check them before your visit, especially if accessibility is a deciding factor.

Dripping Springs Lake, near Okmulgee, was designated Oklahoma’s first “Trophy Bass Lake.” For trip planning, this is a different kind of point of interest from the hiking trail described above: here, the lake’s designation is the focus, while the trail is defined by a specific length and partial accessibility.

More Things to Do

Hawthorne Park has a skate park as well as baseball and softball fields. These facilities offer a different kind of recreation from the hiking trail by the lake. If your visit depends on a particular facility, check the latest information in advance; offerings may change.

At the Okmulgee Farmers Market, visitors can meet local farmers and market gardeners and take home fresh produce. The products available vary by season. So if you’re looking for specific items, take the time of year into account when planning.

One Fire Casino offers more than 350 electronic games, including Texas Hold’em and blackjack. Entertainment is available on weekends. This gives you another distinct reason to visit, alongside the historical and nature-related attractions. If a particular weekend is important to your plans, check the current entertainment schedule in advance.
