Checotah offers a range of ways to plan your stay: a historic downtown district, Katy Depot and Honey Springs Battlefield, as well as nature and recreation activities. You can tailor your trip to focus more on history and remembrance or on activities on the water and along trails.

History and Remembrance

A four-block area of downtown Checotah was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Katy Depot adds to the historical sites with a restored wooden MKT depot building dating from 1890. It is listed as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Honey Springs Battlefield preserves the site of the largest military clash ever to take place in Oklahoma. African American, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Anglo-American soldiers took part in the battle. Six walking trails and 55 interpretive panels combine outdoor exercise with opportunities to learn about this historic site.

At Honey Springs Battlefield, a remembrance ceremony and a full reenactment of the battle are recurring historical events. The two events follow different schedules: the remembrance ceremony is held annually in mid-July, while the full reenactment takes place every three years. Check current event dates before your trip.
