Landscape and Water

The Sans Bois Mountains run along the northern edge of Latimer County. The western ridges of the Winding Stair Mountains extend into the southern part of the county. To the southwest, part of Sardis Lake reaches into Latimer County. The geographic landmarks therefore vary by direction: mountain ranges extend along the northern edge and into the south, while the lake occupies part of the county in the southwest.

Lake Carlton offers opportunities for fishing and swimming. Water conditions and access may vary; keep this in mind when planning if you intend to take part in these activities. Sardis Lake and Lake Carlton represent different aspects of the area's waters: Sardis Lake is noted for its location in the southwest of the county, while fishing and swimming are possible at Lake Carlton.

Nature and Activities

Robbers Cave State Park was established in 1935. Its name comes from a cave that outlaws historically used as a hideout. The park's history thus connects a specific natural feature with the story behind its name.

The park has caves, seasonal trout fishing, boating and hunting, as well as hiking and horseback riding trails. Sandstone cliffs are designated for climbing and rappelling; in the fall, there are opportunities to see the changing foliage. The range of activities spans trails and water-based activities to climbing and rappelling. Seasonality is also important when planning: trout fishing is seasonal, and conditions can change.

Shoreline access along the designated trout stream is good; the entire stream lies within Robbers Cave State Park. Check current conditions before your visit, as access may change.

Traces of History

In Wilburton, the Lutie Coal Miners Museum commemorates the region's industrial history. The area's mining history also comes with a notable statistic: the Great Western Coal and Coke Company Mine #3 was the largest slope mine in the Wilburton Coal Fields. Its inclined shaft extended 3,000 feet below the surface.

The Edwards Store is one of seven surviving structures from the historic Butterfield Overland Stage and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also served as the first location of the Red Oak post office. Archaeologists have identified 124 prehistoric sites in Latimer County, including three Paleo-Indian sites.

Market and Fall Events

The Wilburton Main Street Farmer’s Market takes place from April through October on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and the second Saturday of each month. Check the seasonal dates before visiting so you can plan around your preferred market day.

October features two annual events: Pumpkin Palooza in Red Oak takes place on the fourth Sunday of the month, and the Robbers Cave Fall Festival is held on the third weekend in October. Unlike the market, which follows a recurring weekly schedule, these festivals take place on specific dates in October. Dates and programs may change; check the events calendar for your travel year.
