A train station beside a depot museum, historic buildings, and lakes with different rules for use give a trip to Garvin County several specific points of interest. In Pauls Valley, the themes range from railroad history to seasonal recreation and events; Wynnewood adds the story of a former hotel. Planning also involves checking specific dates and visiting conditions.

Museums and History

Pauls Valley is a stop on the Heartland Flyer; the Santa Fe Depot Museum is next to the station. At the museum, you can see old photographs, school memorabilia, and pioneer-era mementos. Near the depot are a steam locomotive with a coal tender and a historic red caboose. The Heartland Flyer connects Oklahoma City and Fort Worth daily. If you plan to take this train, check the schedule with Amtrak before your trip.

The Toy & Action Figure Museum opened on October 15, 2005, and focused on the art and modeling of action figures. A closure after August 30, 2026, had been announced for its Pauls Valley location. Confirm its current status before planning a visit.

The Murray-Lindsay Mansion includes an 1880 house with furnishings associated with Frank Murray, who was of Irish descent, and his wife, Alzira McCaughey, a Choctaw woman. The building has 15 rooms, two bathrooms, and four fireplaces. Across from the mansion is the two-room 1908 schoolhouse, which is part of the Murray-Lindsay Mansion & Pikes Peak School.

In Wynnewood, the Eskridge Hotel was built in 1907 and remained an operating hotel and boarding house until 1970. The Eskridge Hotel Museum spans three floors and features historic furnishings and exhibits: an undertaking parlor, a barbershop, a post office, a doctor's office, and a veterans' memorial exhibit. Visits are by appointment; confirm in advance whether a visit is possible.

Initial Point lies on the border between Garvin County and Murray County. The entire state of Oklahoma, except for the Panhandle, was surveyed from there. The site thus connects a specific border location with the state's surveying history.

Local Traditions and Experiences

The story of Field's Pecan Pie Factory in Pauls Valley dates back to 1922, when Mrs. Hazelle Field baked pecan pies in her kitchen for her husband's restaurant. Her recipe is still used. Offerings include pecan, chocolate, and lemon chess pies. Since the selection can change, check in advance which varieties are available if you are interested.

Lakes, Parks, and Recreation

Pauls Valley City Lake covers 750 acres and was established in 1954 for camping, fishing, boating, and swimming. Facilities include RV sites with hookups, basic tent sites, boat ramps, fishing piers, picnic areas, and a pavilion. Permits from the city are required for fishing, camping, boating, and hunting at the lake; check current rules and conditions before your visit.

Pauls Valley Water Park is open in summer, from late May through September 1. Since seasonal operating hours can change, check the current dates before your visit.

Wacker Park combines sports and recreational areas: it has baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, and rodeo facilities. There are also playgrounds, paths for walking and jogging, and a stage for live performances. The rose garden is ideal for a leisurely stroll.

The Flightline Disc Golf Course was designed by Houck on a former municipal golf course; granite markers are provided at the tee areas. The back nine is more challenging than the front nine because of the prevailing winds and dense brush on holes 13 and 14. In contrast, the Pauls Valley Municipal Golf Course has a 9-hole course, a driving range, a putting green, and a chipping bunker. It is located just off I-35 at Exit 70 East and offers golf cart rentals. Check current details in advance if you plan to use specific facilities or rent a cart.
