Lawton appeals to travelers with a range of interests: swimming and water sports take center stage by the water, while museums and cultural sites tell stories of history from different perspectives. When planning, it helps to distinguish between these highlights. Seasonal offerings, exhibitions with their own schedules and a dated visitor policy can all be decisive for your travel dates.

Swimming and Water Sports

Lake Lawtonka lies north of Lawton. It is suitable for swimming, boating and various water sports. At the same time, it is located at the foot of Mount Scott and borders the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Here, recreational activities meet a striking landscape.

The Lawton Aquatic Center is the city’s main summer swimming facility. It features a lazy river, a diving pool with diving boards, a leisure pool, a children’s pool and family water slides. Its seasonal schedule is important when choosing your dates: the facility officially opens every year on Memorial Day weekend, though the exact dates may vary.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge lies in the wider regional area of Lawton/Fort Sill. It preserves about 60,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie, ancient granite mountains, and freshwater lakes and streams. This landscape complements the water activities at Lake Lawtonka with a broader natural area. The two places therefore offer different points of interest for travelers drawn to either water or the regional landscape.

Museums and Regional History

The Museum of the Great Plains combines interactive exhibits with self-guided activities. Visitors can use them to explore the region’s past, present and future. Its focus extends beyond local history: the museum presents the cultural and natural history of North America’s Great Plains.

Exhibits include the Domebo Dig Site, an authentic reconstruction of an archaeological excavation from the 1960s. The excavation revealed evidence of human activity dating back 11,000 years. This specific exhibit makes the passage of time tangible and complements the broader look at natural and cultural history.

The main building was scheduled to close after August 15, 2026, for extensive maintenance and repair work. Free public access to the outdoor areas was to be available Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Because this visitor policy applies to a specific period, check before your trip whether the main building has reopened and access to the outdoor areas is still available.

Cultural Perspectives and Art

The exhibition “One Day in March” at the Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center tells the story of the 1840 Council House Fight and focuses on the Comanche perspective. Drawings by Comanche artist Ed Hoosier contribute to the oral tradition. If you would like to include this exhibition in your plans, check before your trip whether it will be on view during your visit.

Lawton’s International Festival takes place on the last weekend of September. It was founded in 1979 to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity. Check the event dates for the year you plan to travel. Its fixed association with September distinguishes the festival as a time-specific event from museum topics that are relevant year-round.

Public art adds its own distinctive touches. Artists Terry and Darry Shaw created an oversize Superman mural in Lawton. Visitors can also tour the Leo and Ken’s Truck Stop building and take a photo in front of the mural. Another oversize mural is located on the Lawton Fort Sill Art Council building.

The Fort Sill National Historic Landmark & Museum is a 19th-century Army frontier post. The site includes approximately 50 buildings and the surrounding grounds. Since access to the active military installation should be checked before visiting, plan this stop separately.
