Lake Tenkiller, also known as Tenkiller Ferry Lake, offers a clear point of reference for the landscape around Cherokee. This natural body of water in the Cookson Hills lies on the Illinois River, south of Tahlequah, and extends into Cherokee County. Lakeshores, river landscapes and cultural themes offer different ways to shape a trip.

Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River

Lake Tenkiller has 130 miles of shoreline and public areas with boat ramps. This makes the lake a prominent landmark for anyone planning to spend time on the water. The Illinois River offers a different view of the landscape: for more than 60 miles, clear water flows over flint between tall cliffs, gravel bars and lush forests.

The Upper Illinois River is a Class II river with mild rapids and is suitable for float trips. Along the northern stretch of State Highway 10, outfitters rent canoes, kayaks and rafts and take guests upstream. All American Floats offers trips of four, nine or 14 miles by raft, canoe and kayak. Operations are seasonal; check current availability before your trip. If you’d rather fish than go out on the water, the Lower Illinois River offers year-round trout fishing. Fishing regulations may change.

Nature, Trails and Activities

The J.T. Nickel Family Nature & Wildlife Preserve borders the Illinois River. Its landscape includes rocky clearings, spring-fed streams, forests, savannas, scrubland and prairie. The area is home to elk, black bears, white-tailed deer, coyotes and bobcats, among many small mammals. The diversity of habitats and wildlife is a key focus here, alongside the river itself.

At Cherokee Landing State Park, the Red Fox Trail offers hiking opportunities. The park’s nature highlights include spring wildflowers, birdwatching and migrating sandhill cranes; it also has a 9-hole disc golf course. The Whispering Pines Mountain Bike Trail is more than 14 miles long and suitable for mountain bikers and hikers at beginner to intermediate skill levels.

Sequoyah State Park adds guided horseback rides, wildlife viewing, nature center activities, fishing and camping to the mix. The Three Forks Nature Center showcases native flora and fauna in informative exhibits and offers a program featuring ambassador animals. The golf options are also different: Cherokee Landing has a disc golf course, while the renovated golf course at Sequoyah State Park has nine holes, 3,040 yards and a par of 35. FlingGolf is also an option there.

The Cherokee National History Museum uses immersive exhibits and augmented reality presentations to share Cherokee history.

The Cherokee Heritage Center is currently closed to the public. The official Cherokee Nation website was updated on November 18, 2025; check its status before traveling.

Year-Round Festivals

The Cherokee National Holiday takes place annually in Tahlequah and commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution in 1839. Dates vary from year to year. Also in Tahlequah, the annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival pairs live performances by bluegrass musicians with award-winning chili in the city center. Crawfest is an annual spring festival featuring crawfish dishes, drinks, competitions and games. Dates for these events also change each year, so plan your trip around the dates for that year.
