In Caddo County, nature experiences at Fort Cobb Lake sit alongside historic sites and museums in Anadarko. Fishing, swimming, and boat rentals shape the activities on the water; in Anadarko, exhibitions and works of art explore different chapters of regional history. The season also matters: bald eagles are found in a particular part of the lake in winter.

Water and Nature at Fort Cobb Lake

Fort Cobb WMA covers around 3,500 acres in Caddo County at the northern end of Fort Cobb Lake. The lake has a water surface of 4,000 acres; Fort Cobb Reservoir is listed as having 45 miles of shoreline. These figures describe different measures: the lake’s water surface, the length of the shoreline, and the size of the WMA.

Fort Cobb WMA has three developed boat ramps. Fishing is available year-round at Fort Cobb Reservoir, and swimming is available at Fort Cobb Lake. Sunset Cove Marina offers boat rentals. This lets you pair activities on the water with a look at the season: bald eagles are found in winter in the part of Fort Cobb Lake that belongs to the state park.

Golf is another activity at Fort Cobb State Park. The golf course there has 18 holes and a par of 70. If you are interested in staying overnight in the park rather than at a hotel, it has 279 RV sites, including 34 with full hookups, as well as 102 tent sites and five cabins. The cabins can be reserved online.

History and Landscape

Fort Cobb was founded on October 1, 1859. Caddo Springs, also called Concho Springs, was a favored resting place along the Chisholm Trail. Historically, Rock Mary served as a landmark for travelers in Caddo County; the site is on private property. These places represent different connections to the county’s history: a founding, a resting place along a trail, and a historic landmark.

The landscape also tells the story of its formation. Red Rock Canyon near Hinton is one of the deep canyons carved by waterways in Caddo County. The region’s history also includes Rock Springs Baptist Church, the first Baptist church founded among the Plains Indians.
