Around the Grace City Bridge, intensively farmed fields and scattered pastures define rural Foster County. The bridge crosses the James River on an unnamed county road, one mile southwest of Grace City. The landscape and structure offer a tangible glimpse into the area and its history.

Bridge History and Regional Culture

The Grace City Bridge is significant under Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. It is associated with efforts by North Dakota counties to expand and improve transportation networks by building truss bridges before 1926. It therefore tells a story not only about a type of construction, but also about an earlier period in the region’s transportation development.

The Foster County Museum documents the history of the county and surrounding areas. Its connected buildings house photographs, display cases, farm equipment and historical records. Next to the museum is a one-room schoolhouse that can be visited by appointment—a special stop for anyone interested in the history of education.

Other historical sites highlight different periods: Camp Kimball State Historic Site was the Sibley Expedition’s field camp on the night of July 22, 1863. Putnam House, meanwhile, is an American Foursquare-style home built by Thomas Putnam in 1907. It hosts exhibitions, performances, classes and demonstrations, as well as other historical, artistic, humanities, family and community events. Individual events may change.
