For outdoor routes, there are public greenways and the American Tobacco Trail; for local history, there are the Historic District and Train Depot. The Farmers Market and PeakFest offer different points of reference on the calendar, while Southern Peak Brewery adds a neighborhood brewery with a taproom to the mix. This makes it easy to tailor your search to your interests and travel dates.

Greenways and the American Tobacco Trail

The Town of Apex currently maintains more than 22 miles of public greenways. The length of the network may change as it continues to develop. Separately, the American Tobacco Trail runs for more than 22 miles from Apex to Durham. Both figures exceed 22 miles, but they refer to different things: the first describes the public greenways maintained by the Town; the second describes the length of a named route between Apex and Durham. So when comparing routes, the number alone is not the deciding factor; consider whether you want to include the municipally maintained greenway network or the specifically named trail in your plans.

Historic District and Train Depot

Downtown Apex was officially designated a Historic District in 1994. The Apex Historic District includes commercial and residential buildings dating back to the late 19th century. This gives you two points of reference: the designation of a downtown district and the history of the buildings within it.

The Apex Train Depot is another historic landmark. It was built between 1867 and 1873 and now serves as a Welcome Center. An old caboose there houses a historic exhibit. The dates refer to different things: 1867 to 1873 is the depot’s construction period, while 1994 is the year the Historic District was officially designated. This distinguishes the building’s history from its later designation.

Farmers Market, PeakFest and Brewery

The Apex Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning in Downtown Apex. Outdoor stalls offer fresh produce, meat and seafood. PeakFest takes place annually on the first Saturday in May in Apex. The two events have clear differences for your calendar planning: the market takes place on Saturday mornings, while PeakFest is an annual event in May. If you’re planning specifically around PeakFest, check the date for your chosen year.

Southern Peak Brewery is a neighborhood brewery with a taproom serving craft beers. This offers a different local point of interest alongside the market and festival: the taproom and the beer served there. Which of these appeals to you most may shape both your travel dates and your plans.

Choose a focus for your hotel search

When choosing a hotel, you can start by distinguishing between calendar-based and thematic interests. The market and PeakFest have specific recurring schedules; the Historic District, Depot and routes offer other points of interest. Decide what matters for your trip, then compare hotel options in Apex to suit your travel dates and interests.
