For a trip with Pinnacle as your destination, hiking trails, scenery and history can each provide a different focus. This lets you plan your stay around the experiences you want rather than a general outdoor theme.

Hiking Trails by Distance and Character

The Bean Shoals Canal Trail is 0.5 miles each way and rated easy. It runs along the Yadkin River and passes the remains of the Bean Shoals Canal. Construction of this canal began in the 1820s but was never completed. The Horne Creek Trail differs in both length and route: It is 2.5 miles long, rated moderate, and follows Horne Creek until it meets the Bean Shoals Canal Trail. The two named trails therefore differ not only in their ratings; each also has a specific river connection and route.

At 3.3 miles, the Pilot Creek Trail is longer and also rated moderate. It crosses the tributaries of Pilot Creek, passes through a pine-oak heath forest, and climbs to the campground. The Corridor Trail is considerably longer and rated strenuous: 6.6 miles, for hiking and horseback riding. The 1.5-mile Yadkin Island Trail is rated moderate, is also used for hiking and horseback riding, and includes a creek crossing.

As an easy option, the Pilot Creek Meadow Walk passes through warm-season grass meadows above Pilot Creek. It is registered as part of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. For a direct comparison by length and rating, the trails offer different profiles: The Bean Shoals Canal Trail is easy and 0.5 miles each way; the Corridor Trail is strenuous and 6.6 miles long. In between are moderate trails of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.3 miles. These specific features can help you narrow down your trail options.

Scenery and Regional History

Pilot Mountain State Park is built around a distinctive geological rock pinnacle. Bean Shoals Access is the main access point for the park’s river section. It can be reached via Exit 29 (Pinnacle). If you plan to visit this section, the access point’s name and the exit number provide a specific reference.

Horne Creek Farm lets visitors experience rural life in North Carolina’s northwestern Piedmont around 1900. The site includes a historic apple orchard, and an annual corn-shucking festival is also held there. Rural life, a historic orchard and a recurring festival are distinct cultural highlights to choose from. If you would like to include regional history in your trip planning as well as hiking trails, the farm offers a specific topic to explore.
