Eden brings together outdoor trails, park amenities, and city history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Eden, the focus of your trip can help guide your choice: nature trails and greenways offer different routes, parks complement them with recreational amenities, while the museum and RiverFest offer a historical and cultural perspective on the city.

Nature Trails and Greenways

The Freedom Park Nature Trail runs from Freedom Park to Country Club Dr.; restrooms are available at the park shelters. The Matrimony Creek Nature Trail follows the creek from Washington St. to Price Road and has picnic tables and restrooms. These provide two distinct route features to help you find your way: one trail from a park to a street, and one that follows a creek. Picnic tables are part of the amenities at the Matrimony Creek Nature Trail.

The Dan River Trail runs between S. Bridge St. and Leaksville Landing. The Smith River Greenway runs from River Dr. to Kennedy St. beside the YMCA. Its features include a picnic shelter, a butterfly trail, a sunflower field, and an otter sculpture; restrooms are available at the shelter.

The Butterfly Trail at Smith River Greenway is 1.7 miles long and is located on River Road, off Meadow Road, in Eden, North Carolina. Along the trail, you can learn about North Carolina’s native butterflies and take part in a scavenger hunt. This trail combines a specific route description with a nature-focused theme. Eden’s greenways and hiking trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Plan your visit within these hours.

Parks and Their Different Amenities

Eden’s parks also each have a different focus. Freedom Park has a splash pad, playground, amphitheater, skate park, dog park, mini golf, and pickleball courts. These recreational amenities complement the park’s Nature Trail with places to play, exercise, and attend events.

Clearwater Park has picnic tables, benches, and a nature trail. Its amenities differ from the wide range of recreational offerings at Freedom Park: seating and a nature trail are the main features here. Island Ford Landing has picnic tables, public art, and an observation platform. At John E. Grogan Park, you’ll find wire animal sculptures and a Karastan mosaic.

City History and RiverFest

The Eden Historical Museum tells Eden’s story from prehistoric times through the consolidation of the three small mill towns that formed the present-day city. The creation of the present-day city is therefore one part of the historical arc covered by the museum.

RiverFest takes place annually in the historic Leaksville area of Uptown Eden and celebrates the city’s art, history, and river heritage. While the museum covers a broad span of time, the festival focuses on these themes as part of a recurring event. If you’d like to plan your trip around RiverFest, check the specific event dates in advance.
