Old Fort can be explored through several distinct themes: mountain traditions, railroad history, art in the town center, and the Old Fort Gateway Trails. This variety can be a good starting point when choosing a hotel in Old Fort: the museum and its cabins represent regional cultural history, the depot represents the railroad, while the gallery, murals, and trails offer other perspectives. This can help you decide whether your main interest is cultural sites, art, or the trails.

Appalachian Culture and Life

The Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center in Old Fort preserves distinctive traditions and customs of the mountains of North Carolina. Its permanent exhibits include folk medicine, moonshining, and regional craft culture. The topics range from inherited knowledge and practices to craft traditions. Visitors seeking to understand regional mountain traditions will encounter several subject areas here.

There are also two cabins on the museum grounds. They show what life in the southern Appalachians was like in the 19th century. The cabins focus on a specific way of life and period, while the permanent exhibits address thematic areas. The museum grounds therefore offer both a time-specific glimpse of everyday life and content organized by theme.

Railroad History at the Depot

The Historic Old Fort Train Depot Museum focuses on historic railroad objects, including artifacts and exhibits. The depot was built in 1880, while the Southern Railway Caboose at the depot was manufactured in the 1940s. These dates therefore do not refer to the same object: one describes the construction of the depot, the other the manufacture of the caboose. This distinction makes the railroad focus easy to place in time without conflating the two dates.

Art in the Town Center

The Arrowhead Gallery & Studios is located in downtown Old Fort and displays works by more than 50 juried artists. Downtown also features hand-painted murals on the exterior walls of seven businesses. The gallery and murals thus represent different forms of art: selected artists’ work in the gallery and paintings on building facades.

The Seven Wonders Trail is an artistic, interpretive route to notable landmarks in Old Fort. Unlike the murals located on exterior walls, it is a trail themed around the town’s landmarks.

Old Fort Gateway Trails

For the Old Fort Gateway Trails, access and scope are two different points of reference. The first 14 miles are open; at the same time, the trails are part of a 42-mile expansion in Pisgah National Forest. The first figure refers to the open section, while the second refers to the scope of the expansion. Two new parking areas have been established to provide access. As conditions may change during reconstruction, check the latest status before planning your visit.
