Bahama: Nature, History and Hotel Search
Accommodation in Bahama
Horton Grove takes visitors through forest and grassland, while Historic Stagville is dedicated to the history of slavery; be sure to check visitor status at Lake Michie and The Orchard on Little River as well.
Nature Trails and Habitats at Horton Grove
Horton Grove Nature Preserve covers 708 acres. Its eight miles of hiking trails lead through mature forests and native grasslands, which provide habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Both landscape types are part of the preserve’s natural experience.
One trail there is the 0.8-mile That Makes Sense Interpretative Trail. Information panels explain how animals and people use their senses to find their way and survive. The two distances refer to different scales: eight miles describes the preserve’s trail network, while 0.8 miles is the length of this named interpretive trail.
The trail names also carry historical significance. They honor descendants of local Black families who were enslaved at Stagville. In this way, the landscape of Horton Grove is connected to the memory of these families’ history.
Historic Sites at Historic Stagville
Historic Stagville is a 165-acre state historic site. Its work includes preserving and interpreting the history of slavery, as well as research, genealogy, and engaging descendants. The site thus brings together physical evidence and the study of family history.
Preserved structures include the Bennehan family home from 1799, original quarters for enslaved people from the 1850s, and a large barn built in 1860. There are also outdoor archaeological sites. The dates span from the late-18th-century family home to the 1860 barn; the quarters refer to the period in between. The historical context therefore brings different structures and archaeological sites together.
Visitor Status at Lake Michie
Facilities at Lake Michie include an ADA-accessible boathouse, a pier, and a ramp for canoes and kayaks. There are also opportunities to fish for largemouth bass. A City of Durham notice dated August 20, 2026, stated that Lake Michie Park & Marina was closed to all activities until further notice due to low water levels. Check the current status before traveling; do not plan on using the listed facilities or fishing at this time.
The Orchard on Little River
The Orchard on Little River grows heirloom and modern varieties of apples, peaches, and blackberries, and is a U-pick farm. The farm reports that it is currently closed for the season. If you are considering a visit, check whether the farm is open to visitors before traveling. Its seasonal status makes this a different planning consideration from the landscapes and historic structures described as permanent.
Weighing Your Interests When Searching for Hotels
For planning purposes, the offerings can be distinguished by their character: Horton Grove combines an extensive trail network with a shorter, interpretive themed trail. Historic Stagville brings together historic buildings and outdoor archaeological sites with research and genealogy. At Lake Michie and The Orchard, by contrast, current visitor status is essential. Decide which of these topics is most important for your trip when searching for hotels in Bahama.
