Thomasville: History, Architecture and Art
Accommodation in Thomasville
Thomasville brings together local history, public art and recreational activities. Historic walking tours and an architecturally diverse district sit alongside a long-running festival, a farmers market and opportunities for sports and exercise. Depending on which of these themes shapes your stay, you can make culture, an event or recreation the focus of your trip planning.
Historic Walking Tours and Architecture
Three self-guided historic walking tours invite you to discover local landmarks, architecture and stories of the city. Each tour begins at the Visitors Center in the historic Train Depot, next to the Red Caboose. Each round trip is less than one mile long. The shared starting point and clearly defined route length give you specific details to consider when fitting the walks into your day.
One of Thomasville’s best-known landmarks is a 30-foot-tall replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair. Its size draws attention to a single object, while the Salem Street Historic District focuses on houses and architectural styles. The district includes houses dating from the mid-19th century onward and a variety of architectural styles spanning more than a century. These include Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian, Gothic Revival, Dutch Colonial and Bungalow. A striking individual landmark and a broad range of styles spanning long periods thus offer different perspectives on the city’s history.
Public Art in Thomasville
The Mural Walk complements the architectural perspective with public art. The initiative features a series of murals celebrating the city’s history, culture and community. The works are typically designed and created by local artists or artist collectives. The Mural Walk thus offers a different focus from the Salem Street Historic District: here, the emphasis is on mural art and celebrating the community, while the district focuses on houses and the variety of their architectural styles.
Festival and Farmers Market
The Everybody’s Day Festival has been held in Thomasville for more than 100 years. Traditionally, it takes place on the last Saturday in September. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the date for your chosen year before finalizing your plans.
The Thomasville Farmers Market is a producer-only market: shoppers buy directly from growers. These offer two distinct points of interest: the festival provides an occasion rooted in a long-standing tradition, while the market focuses on buying directly from growers.
Parks and Swimming
The recreational options also vary by activity. King Row Park has a sports field, basketball court, playground, shelter and walking path. Finch Field includes a playground, picnic tables, walking paths and a baseball field. Doak Park has a children’s playground, skate park, picnic shelters, and basketball and baseball fields. Walking paths are available at King Row Park and Finch Field; the skate park is a distinctive feature of Doak Park.
The Thomasville Aquatics Center complements the parks with a lap pool, a leisure pool and a splash area. The options range from walking paths and sports fields to various pools and water activities. If you’re planning to visit the Aquatics Center, check current hours and programs in advance.
