Banner Elk offers several distinct reasons to visit: seasonal events, local history, Ensemble Stage with 99 seats, Wildcat Lake and guided tours at Apple Hill Farm. If you’re looking for a hotel, the reason for your trip can determine when to go: a concert evening or festival weekend gives you a specific time frame, while the lake, local history and farm tour offer different experiences.

Events Throughout the Year

The Summer Concert Series takes place every Thursday evening from June at the Tate-Evans Park Amphitheater. The series is seasonal; check the current schedule for your travel year.

For nearly 50 years, Banner Elk has welcomed visitors to its annual Woolly Worm Festival. The 2026 program includes woolly worm races, arts and crafts and food vendors, live entertainment, and activities for children; these program details may change.

Art on the Greene presents handmade art and crafts by selected local and regional artists four times each summer on the grounds of the Historic Banner Elk School. The four dates fall on Memorial Day weekend, the weekend of July 4, a weekend in early August, and Labor Day weekend. Check the specific dates for your preferred year; participating artists and program details may change.

Local History and Theater

The Banner House Museum tells the story of Banner Elk and illustrates what life in the mountains of North Carolina was like from the mid- to late 19th century. Built in 1865, the Banner House belonged to the Banners, one of Banner Elk’s founding families.

Ensemble Stage has an intimate 99-seat theater and has moved to Banner Elk.

Guided Tours and Wine

Guided walking tours at Apple Hill Farm last about 45 to 60 minutes. This approximate duration applies to the tour and offers a specific point of reference for planning your day.

Banner Elk Winery is near downtown in a scenic valley surrounded by mountains. It produces blueberry wine, recalling the property’s former use as a blueberry farm; product offerings may change.

For trip planning, the time references serve different purposes: the concert series and Art on the Greene offer recurring seasonal time frames; the farm tour duration refers to the approximate length of a single tour.
