When planning a hotel stay, you can decide whether nature, history or culture will be the focus of your trip. Options include a 0.5-mile trail along the Haw River, a historic battlefield and an outdoor theater.

Nature Trails and Views

Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area provides public access to the largest natural heritage area in Alamance County that is considered significant at the state level. Monadnock Lookout Tower offers expansive 360-degree views. Cedarock Park is in the southern part of the county and covers 500 acres. At the Arboretum at Willowbrook Park, a wide, paved footpath winds through the 17-acre park. It also has an accessible treehouse.

Along the Haw River: Hiking and Paddling

If you want to compare trails, you’ll find different distances: Shallow Ford has more than 5 miles of natural-surface hiking trails, while the Haw River Land Trail includes 20 miles of hiking trails. The Land Trail is described as offering scenic river and wildlife views. The Haw River Trail is part of the state’s Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Separately, the Haw River Paddle Trail offers 40 miles of paddling throughout Alamance County.

Shallow Ford also has a paddling access point with put-in and take-out options, stairs and a boat ramp. Shallow Ford’s Wildflower Meadow and Observation Deck are on the Basin Creek Trail. Along the Haw River, Great Bend Park at Glencoe covers 30 wooded acres. Its 0.5-mile Island Trail offers access for fishing and paddling; there are also several picnic areas. This gives you a choice of shorter and longer routes, as well as activities on foot and on the water.

History at Historic Sites

Cedarock Historical Farm offers an example of rural farm life in North Carolina in the late 19th century. Alamance Battleground preserves the site of the 1771 battle between the Regulators and the militia of royal governor William Tryon. During a visit, you can see the battlefield, the 18th-century Allen House and the battlefield monuments.

Great Bend Park at Glencoe also has a historic connection: it adjoins historic Glencoe Mill Village. The Black Bottom District Walking Tour offers another way to explore local history. It honors the history of the Black community in downtown Burlington and starts at the Downtown Depot.

Museums and Regional Culture

Each museum focuses on a different subject. Alamance County Historical Museum explores Victorian American life and is located at a historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mebane Historical Museum collects, preserves and presents the cultural history of Mebane and the surrounding region through special events, public programs and educational exhibits.
