Mt Kisco: Nature, Art and History
Accommodation in Mt Kisco
Mt Kisco offers wetlands, woodland and meadow landscapes, nature activities, art and indoor entertainment, as well as a historical connection to the Revolutionary War. For planning purposes, the locations mainly differ in their landscapes, walking times and types of activities: alongside a short walk, there are seasonal views, nature and educational facilities, and cultural and recreational activities.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
The Peninsula Wetlands Trail is easily accessible from downtown Mount Kisco. A flat, easy walk to the end of the peninsula and back to the entrance on Lieto Drive takes 20 to 30 minutes. If you plan to take this loop, check local conditions before setting out.
Branch Brook flows through the wetlands where the trail is located. More than 35 bird species, as well as dozens of butterflies, bumblebees and dragonflies, can be found there.
Most of Kisco Mountain’s 66 acres are covered with mature trees. The Kisco Mountain Trail begins on a gently sloping, four-acre meadow and offers seasonal views of the Village. It also offers views of the valley and the hills to the east toward Merestead. The natural scenery differs accordingly: trees and meadow define the landscape on Kisco Mountain, while wetlands and wildlife take center stage along the Peninsula Wetlands Trail.
The Woodcrest Trail features a pond filled with water lilies in spring, as well as five benches for forest bathing and relaxation. A 1½-mile trail leads from Marsh Sanctuary to Leonard Park, which is in Mount Kisco.
The Early Settlement — River Walk Trail runs through a landscape shaped by streams and woods; the Kisco River flows there. Tall tree canopies and a natural view across Leonard Park are also part of this landscape.
Nature and Culture
More than 300 bird species have been documented at Westmoreland Sanctuary. Its habitats include fields, woods, streams and three different ponds. The Sanctuary’s Nature Center houses live animals and educational exhibits. Admission is free; the building is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Mount Kisco Arts Council organizes concerts, writing workshops, pop-up exhibitions and the monthly Art Hub. The Katonah Art Center is also located in Mount Kisco and offers classes, camps and exhibitions for all ages. The two cultural offerings have different focuses: the Arts Council brings together events and the monthly Art Hub, while the Art Center also offers classes and camps for all ages.
A trail runs through the 13th French encampment, where 5,000 French soldiers camped in 1781 while marching to Virginia and the Battle of Yorktown.
Indoor Entertainment
K1 Speed Mount Kisco is an indoor entertainment center with a ninja obstacle course, bowling lanes and electric go-karting on an indoor track. This indoor option complements Mt Kisco’s nature and cultural activities.
