Shandaken brings together nature and local history in a trip you can plan around specific places and trails. The hamlet of Mount Tremper is home to the Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey Catskills Visitor Center; Pine Hill is home to the Town of Shandaken Historical Museum. The Shandaken Wild Forest is in the hamlet of Shandaken and includes the John Burroughs Memorial Forest. This gives you a range of options, from trails and woodland to exhibits about the twelve hamlets.

Nature Trails, Paths, and Forest

The Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey Catskills Visitor Center features the 80-foot-tall Upper Esopus Fire Tower and 1.5 miles of nature trails, including ADA-accessible paths. One specific trail at the Catskills Visitor Center is the Esopus Creek Trail. It is about half a mile long, follows an out-and-back route across Route 28 to the banks of Esopus Creek, and was built to ADA accessibility standards. This specifies both the route and an accessibility standard for this trail.

The Rochester Hollow section of the Shandaken Wild Forest has three marked trails. The longest is the 2.7-mile Colonel Rochester Trail. In winter, cross-country skiers use the trails in Rochester Hollow; however, they are not groomed or maintained for cross-country skiing. If you plan a winter visit, keep this distinction in mind and check trail conditions before setting out.

The Shandaken Wild Forest also includes the John Burroughs Memorial Forest, a planting of white spruce and Norway spruce on an abandoned farm property. The description connects a specific choice of trees with the site's former use. Along with the marked trails, visitors interested in the landscape will also find a named place with its own history.

The trail distances offer different planning options: the Esopus Creek Trail is an out-and-back route about half a mile long, while the Colonel Rochester Trail is 2.7 miles long. Together with the information about ADA accessibility at the Catskills Visitor Center, these distinctions can help you decide which trails suit your stay.
