East Quogue brings together local history, nature trails along Shinnecock Bay, and the East Quogue Village Green. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can start by deciding whether the landscape, local history, or both are your main focus. Nature trails, local history, and the Village Green offer specific points of interest to help you decide.

Nature Trails at Pine Neck Nature Sanctuary

Pine Neck Nature Sanctuary is a specific nature destination in East Quogue. Its marked loop trail system passes through woodland and along a salt marsh, ending at an overlook on Shinnecock Bay. The area includes a Long Island Pine Barrens habitat as well as a coastal salt marsh along the bay. The trail description thus connects several types of landscape with a clear link to the coast.

The trails cover 2.4 miles and are open from morning until evening for hiking and nature observation. Birdwatching and photography are also possible in the sanctuary. The Bay to Bay Trail also ends at the sanctuary on Shinnecock Bay. The coastal trail leads to an overlook and a small stretch of beach that is accessible at low tide. If you plan to visit this section, take the tide into account and check current trail conditions before your visit.

Local History and Historic Sites

The area’s history can be traced through three names and dates. East Quogue was founded in 1673 as Fourth Neck. On January 12, 1858, its name was changed to Atlanticville; on March 25, 1891, it was named East Quogue. The sequence of names thus traces the area from its founding through two later names to its present name.

The East Quogue History Group website offers online exhibitions about the area’s history. The online offerings may change. Asbury House is also part of East Quogue’s history: it once housed a headquarters and a museum; both were later relocated. The online exhibitions provide digital access, while Asbury House recalls a former museum use that was later relocated.

East Quogue Village Green

East Quogue Village Green complements the nature preserve and local history with a community park. It includes a playground, picnic tables, a pavilion area, and restrooms; the park also has a walking path. Unlike Pine Neck Nature Sanctuary, where woodland, marsh, and coastal trails are the main features, the Village Green focuses on park amenities and its walking path.

The Village Green was dedicated in 2017 as the first certified AGZA Green Zone Park in the eastern United States. This historic milestone adds a specific date to the current visitor offerings. Since amenities may change, check current information about the facilities before your visit.
