Suffern is designated as a gateway to the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. The village brings together several clearly distinct themes for your stay: rail connections, two rivers and Lake Antrim, a challenging trail, and historically significant buildings and collections. If you are looking for a hotel in Suffern, these specific local features can help you plan your destination choice.

Getting There and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail

Suffern Station is served by local and express New Jersey Transit trains. Check the timetable for your route before travelling. A trailhead for the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail is within walking distance of both the station and Main Street. The trail itself stretches for 23.5 challenging miles to Bear Mountain. This means the accessible trailhead and the length of the entire route are two different considerations for your planning. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Rivers and Landscape

The Ramapo River runs along the western boundary of the Village of Suffern. Farther south, the Mahwah River passes through the center; Lake Antrim is a reservoir on the Mahwah River. These details describe different geographical relationships: the Ramapo lies along the western boundary, while the Mahwah River flows through the village center and is connected to Lake Antrim. This makes it possible to distinguish Suffern’s waterways by their respective relationships to the village, rather than treating them collectively as a single local landmark.

Historic Buildings and Collections

Christ Church is the oldest surviving building in Suffern and has seven Tiffany windows. The church stands on land once occupied by Rochambeau, the French companion of George Washington. The building, its windows and the history of the site each represent different aspects of the place: its surviving architecture, its features and the site’s historical connection.

Brooklands Park is the site of Brooklands. The Lafayette Theatre opened in 1924 and is Rockland County’s only surviving movie palace. The theater also houses a restored 1931 Wurlitzer pipe organ. The opening year, the surviving building type and the organ offer specific points of reference if you are interested in Suffern’s architectural and cultural history.

The Ramapo Room in the Suffern Free Library contains historical books, newspaper clippings and photographs of the western Ramapo. The Suffern Village Museum features exhibits on the history of Suffern and the Ramapo area, including topics related to Indigenous peoples and nearby iron mines. This lets you distinguish between historical materials in the library and the museum’s exhibition topics.

Suffern’s Soldier’s Monument, also known as the Washington Ave. Monument, is an NRHP landmark. The Suffern’s Tavern Site housed numerous Continental Army officers, including General Washington and Aaron Burr. These two places add named historic sites and their respective connections to the themes of architecture and collections.

The Suffern Railroad Museum is located at 1 Erie Plaza. Seasonal opening hours are listed as Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May through November. Check the hours before you arrive.
