Amsterdam: Trails, History and the Mohawk River
Accommodation in Amsterdam
The Erie Canal runs through the city of Amsterdam along the Mohawk River. The area also offers trails of varying lengths, historic sites, and seasonal recreational activities. Specific route information and the visiting hours of individual facilities can help with planning. Some services at Riverlink Park are expressly intended for boaters who dock there.
Compare Trails and Loops
The Chuctanunda Creek Trail forms an 8-mile loop from the Mohawk River through downtown and is suitable for cyclists and pedestrians. Waterfalls, bridges, and dams are among the features along the trail. This recreational and educational trail also includes points of interest related to history, geology, and ecology.
Shorter loops offer a different scale: the Chuctanunda Creek Greenway is a pedestrian-friendly 1.5-mile loop in the heart of the city. The MVGO & Riverlink Trail is a 1-mile loop for cyclists and pedestrians. Along Dove Creek, a pedestrian-friendly 0.75-mile nature loop winds through the area. This makes it easy to compare trail lengths; the routes also differ in character and in their stated permitted uses.
In Amsterdam, the Erie Canalway Trail connects with the MVGO and Riverlink Park. This connection complements the individual loops and links the named waterfront locations.
History and Culture in the Mohawk Valley
The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook Bridge has twelve stops with explanatory text on important topics in Mohawk Valley history. The bridge is also home to the 12-foot-diameter glass mosaic “Wheel of Life.” It was inspired by a larger mosaic in the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue in Manhattan. The bridge is open from spring until the first snowfall in winter; check the seasonal opening period before your visit.
Guy Park is another historic site in Amsterdam: it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Amsterdam’s 9/11 Memorial contains one of the largest unaltered remnants of the World Trade Center in Upstate New York. These sites highlight different themes—from the history of the Mohawk Valley and a historic register listing to remembrance of September 11.
The Walter Elwood Museum offers educational programs, unique collections, and creative activities. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Evening or weekend appointments can be arranged; admission is free. Check opening hours, appointments, and admission details before your visit.
River Park, Green Spaces, and Seasonal Recreation
Riverlink Park is located on the Mohawk River. Visitors traveling by boat on the river can use a boat dock, fresh water, and 120- to 240-volt electrical service. Restrooms, a shower, and laundry facilities are provided for boaters who dock at the park. As docking options and facilities may change, it is advisable to check before your trip.
Amsterdam has well over 25 green spaces and public parks open to residents and visitors. Another seasonal option is the municipal Olympic-size swimming pool: it is available to residents and visitors from late June through late August. Its dimensions are clearly defined: 50 meters long and 25 meters wide. Check seasonal operating hours again before your trip.
Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a municipal golf course in Amsterdam that has been operating since 1938. The Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Its history and the designer’s name add to the city’s current recreational and cultural offerings without reducing them to a single activity.
