Leonardsville can be explored through two distinct highlights: the architectural history of the Wheeler Complex and the grounds of the Horned Dorset Colony. In the hamlet, historic architecture and a landscape of orchards, vegetable gardens, a waterfall, woods, and pastures take center stage. At the Town of Brookfield level, an extensive trail system and a long history of county fairs add to the picture. For your travel planning, these offer different perspectives: culture and landscape in Leonardsville, and recreation and events in the town.

The Wheeler Complex and Its History

Built in 1874, the Wheeler Complex consists of an Italianate-style house, the Wheeler Commercial Block, and a two-story carriage house. In 1983, the complex was listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the State Register of Historic Places. The two years mark different milestones: 1874 is the year it was built, and 1983 is the year it was listed on the registers.

The second floor of the Wheeler Commercial Block, known as “Wheeler Hall,” served as a venue in Leonardsville for graduation ceremonies, concerts, and lectures. This former use adds a cultural dimension to the architectural history: the focus is not only on the ensemble of three buildings, but also on the role one part of the complex once played as an event venue.

In 2022, the Horned Dorset Inn maintained and renovated the three historic buildings of the Wheeler Complex. The Horned Dorset Colony used parts of the complex for its artist-in-residence program. Thus, the complex’s history includes not only its construction but also a later chapter of preservation and artist residencies.

Landscape and Culinary Experiences

The grounds of the Horned Dorset Colony cover 250 acres and are located in the hamlet of Leonardsville. They include a working apple orchard, organic vegetable gardens, a waterfall, and several miles of trails through rolling woodland and pastures. The grounds are located on a former Horned Dorset sheep farm. Fruit and vegetable cultivation, woods, and pastureland sit alongside the site’s historic connection to sheep farming.

Recreation and Events in the Town of Brookfield

The Town of Brookfield is home to the Brookfield Trail System, with 130 miles of interconnected recreational trails. Activities include hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and mountain biking. The town’s trail system covers more activities than the hiking trails on the Horned Dorset Colony grounds. The 130 miles refer to the Brookfield Trail System in the town, while the several miles of hiking trails are on the Colony grounds.

The Madison County Fair in Brookfield also offers a historical connection: it began in 1839 and has drawn thousands of visitors since its inception. If you’d like to plan your trip around the fair, check the current dates with the organizer.
