If you’re considering Nunda as a travel destination, there are several distinct themes to explore: the town’s history, art and regional history, and the Genesee Valley Greenway. These themes offer different starting points for planning your stay. When looking for a hotel, you might first consider whether you’d like to get to know Nunda primarily through its historic buildings and canal history, or include the multi-use trail in your trip. The following information will help you distinguish between these options.

History Between the District and an Individual Building

The Nunda Village Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in February 2025. Its historical span extends from 1831 to 1955: the district reflects Nunda’s history during this period. This makes it easy to distinguish between the formal recognition and the longer period covered by the historical designation.

The Union Block offers a distinct perspective. In 1999, it was added to both the state and national registers of historic places. It was the first building in the Town of Nunda to receive this recognition. The district and the Union Block thus represent two scales of local heritage: an area with a longer historical span and an individual building with a clearly defined register history.

Buildings and Canal Heritage on the Historic Tour

The DePuy Mansion is one of the stops on the Nunda Historical Society’s historic tour. Today, the building serves as the administrative center for the Town and Village of Nunda. The stop can therefore be understood in terms of both its historical role and its present-day function.

The historic tour also features Genesee Valley Canal Lock 42 and notes several canal locks and canal bridges within the town. Alongside an individual building, visitors can also see evidence of canal traffic: Lock 42 is specifically named, while other locks and bridges are included as part of the town’s history.

Art and Regional History

The Rose M Shave Gallery displays paintings by Rose Shave and works by other local artists. The Nunda Museum presents the region’s history from the “Old Ones” to the present day. The institutions thus offer different perspectives: the gallery focuses on art by Rose Shave and other artists from the area, while the museum focuses on the region’s long history. For groups, the Nunda Historical Society offers guided tours of the museum and gallery upon request.

Genesee Valley Greenway: Historic Route, Multiple Uses

The Genesee Valley Greenway adds the development of a historic transportation corridor to the area’s history. The Genesee Valley Canal once ran along this route; later, the Pennsylvania Railroad used it. New York State is converting the corridor into the Genesee Valley Greenway, a 90-mile multi-use trail. Its former uses as a canal and railway, along with its ongoing transformation, form a sequence over time.

Visitors to the Genesee Valley Greenway pass through the center of Nunda. A Greenway spur from Nunda Junction gives hikers, cyclists, skiers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers access to the Village of Nunda. These provide different points of reference for planning your trip: visitors pass through the center, while the spur provides access to the Village for the user groups listed.
