Accommodation in Marathon
Marathon, in New York State, brings together two annual festivals, golf, a riverside park, and a historic building. The seasons of these events offer a clear starting point for planning your trip: the Maple Festival takes place in spring, and the Union Fair in September. Tastings, the weekly farmers' market, and activities along the Tioughnioga River also offer different ways to get to know the town.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Central New York Maple Festival takes place each spring in Marathon and celebrates the town's maple syrup industry. The festival includes a Maple Pageant and a pancake-eating contest. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact event dates before making arrangements.
The Union Fair takes place every September in Marathon. It features vendor stalls, baked goods exhibits, quilt and garden displays, and horse-drawn carriage parades. This gives you two distinct travel periods to choose from: the spring festival celebrating the maple syrup industry, and the September fair with its exhibits and parades. If you plan to time your stay around the event, check the dates for the year in question as well.
Golf, Tastings, and the Farmers' Market
Maple Hill Golf Club is a public 18-hole course in Marathon. Golf therefore offers a distinct focus alongside the seasonal festivals. Dragonfyre Distillery offers tastings of its products, adding another local activity to the mix.
The Marathon Farmers' Market takes place weekly on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Village Green. Weekly schedules may change, so check the hours before your visit. This makes it easy to plan a market visit for a Saturday morning, while the festivals are primarily tied to their season and the specific dates of each event.
The Tioughnioga River and Lovell Field
The Tioughnioga River flows south through the Town of Marathon and is the main waterway in Cortland County. Lovell Field is Marathon's town park and has a boat launch; the river forms the western boundary of the grounds.
Below the old steel bridge are shallow areas suited to fishing or cooling off in the water on warm days. The park also has a playground with sweeping views across the valley. These park features offer distinct experiences: the shallow areas are suited to fishing and cooling off, while the playground offers views across the valley.
A Former Opera House
The Peck Memorial Library was formerly an opera house and was built in 1894 in the Late Victorian style. The building retains original features from its former use, including a full stage, a balcony, a trapdoor, and an ornate plaster ceiling. The construction date and preserved theater details tell two different parts of the building's story: its architectural classification and its former function.
Above the library are 11 restored skylights, which are illuminated at night. Together with the stage and balcony, they are distinctive features of the building, while its former use as an opera house is not reduced to its year of construction alone.
Getting Oriented in Marathon
Some of Marathon's main roads are Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11, and New York State Route 221. These roads give you specific reference points for locating Marathon on the map. You can weigh up these different themes when deciding whether to focus your stay on a festival, golf, the river, or local history.
