Oxford: History, Music and Nature
Accommodation in Oxford
For a stay in Oxford, there are several themes to explore: the architectural history of the Village of Oxford, nature in Wiley Brook State Forest, and music at 6 On The Square. As you plan your trip, you can first consider which of these themes matters most to you.
Architecture and Local History
The Oxford Village Historic District includes 201 buildings and seven contributing structures. The Village offers walks past historic homes in the Greek Revival, Gothic, and Queen Anne architectural styles. If you are interested in architecture, these styles provide a clear theme for your visit.
The Chenango Canal was built in 1837 and ran through the center of the Village of Oxford. The former home of renowned bridge builder Theodore Burr is now the Oxford Memorial Library and Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center. Along with the homes and the Historic District, this adds both the history of the canal and a place connected to Burr to your visit.
Forest, Trails and Nature
Wiley Brook State Forest covers 1,240 acres and is located in the Towns of Oxford and Guilford in Chenango County. A one-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail runs through the southwestern part of the forest. An 11-mile section of the trail also runs through Oxford. These two distances refer to different areas: one describes a section of the forest, while the other describes the trail’s route through Oxford.
There is a primitive campsite in the forest on the east shore of Wiley Pond, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rules for camping on state land and availability can change. If you plan to use the site, check both before your trip.
Bowman Lake State Park is just outside Oxford. It features a 35-acre spring-fed lake, picnic facilities, paddleboat rentals, and nature trails. These amenities offer a different way to enjoy nature than the trails and camping opportunities in Wiley Brook State Forest.
Music and Local Products
6 On The Square is an intimate venue for attentive listening. It presents nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as emerging talent. This musical focus offers a different perspective from the architecture walks and nature experiences.
In Oxford, you can sample locally made maple syrup. This tasting adds a culinary connection to the region to your trip planning.
