Discover Deming: History, Art, and Wine
Accommodation in Deming
Deming brings together history, art, and wine, along with opportunities for walks and excursions around the region. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan around whether you’d like to focus primarily on collections, architecture, seasonal events, or time outdoors.
Collections and Architecture in Deming
The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum is housed in the historic 1916 National Guard Armory. One of its main attractions is one of the largest exhibitions of Mimbres pottery, featuring black-on-white and red-on-white designs dating from 950 to 1250 AD. The pottery exhibition has its own focus alongside the Western Area Room, which is devoted to life in Luna County in the late 19th century.
In the Western Area Room, recreated ranch scenes and depictions of the cattle business include covered wagons and historic tack. This means you can encounter both Mimbres pottery and insights into the region’s cowboy and ranching traditions at the museum. Another architectural landmark is the Luna County Courthouse in Deming, built in 1910. Together with the 1916 Armory, the two construction dates provide a specific time frame for Deming’s historic buildings.
Art, Wine, and Seasonal Events
Exhibitions at the Deming Arts Center change monthly. Artist receptions and exhibitions are free and open to the public. If art is a focus of your trip, the Center offers a reason to visit in its own right, while the changing exhibition schedule brings different displays into view.
D.H. Lescombes Winery & Tasting Room offers curated wine tastings seven days a week. There is also a menu of casual meals featuring dishes paired with the winery’s wines. Seasonal tours showcase the winemaking process at New Mexico’s largest winery. Tastings and tours therefore differ mainly in their availability: tastings are offered seven days a week, while tours are seasonal. Check tour dates before your trip.
The Great American Duck Race also offers a date to plan around: it takes place every year in August. The event began in 1980 with the idea of a group of men from Deming to promote and enliven business in the community. If the race is important to your stay, confirm the dates in advance.
City Walks and Time Outdoors
The self-guided Historic Downtown Walking Tour visits 16 architectural landmarks spread across four blocks in downtown Deming. You can tailor the walk to your own interests; its clearly defined focus is architecture and downtown buildings.
Trees Lake in Voiers’ “Pit” Park offers trails and suitable picnic spots for walks and picnics. The lake is also part of the New Mexico Game and Fish Department’s stocking program. Beyond Deming’s individual attractions, the city serves as a starting point for self-guided tours of southern New Mexico, including the Florida Mountains and Rockhound State Park.
The city walk and regional tours differ in scale: the Downtown Tour focuses on 16 architectural points within four blocks, while Deming serves as a starting point for tours of southern New Mexico. This lets you choose between a clearly defined downtown theme and a regional exploration focus for your stay.
