Ruidoso Downs: Horse Racing, Culture, and Hotels
Accommodation in Ruidoso Downs
Horse racing and the culture of the American West are among the defining themes of a stay in Ruidoso Downs. The All American Futurity, the history of the Hubbard Museum of the American West, outdoor art, and pottery classes appeal to a range of interests.
The All American Futurity
The All American Futurity is Ruidoso Downs’ signature race. It was the world’s first race in which horses of any breed competed for a $1 million purse. The Futurity is run over 440 yards on Labor Day each year. The million-dollar purse marks the historic milestone; the distance and date define the recurring race format. This distinguishes the race’s unique history from its annual timing.
The Hubbard Museum of the American West
The Hubbard Museum of the American West became the first museum in New Mexico to join the Smithsonian Affiliate program in 2000. In 2005, R. D. and Joan Dale Hubbard transferred the museum to the City of Ruidoso Downs. The two dates represent different milestones: joining the program and the later transfer to the city. The exhibits present the cultures of Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and pioneers. The renowned Stradling Collection includes bits, spurs, bridles, and saddles from around the world. As of February 3, 2026, the museum is temporarily closed for renovations until further notice. Check its current visitor status before traveling.
Outdoor Art and Pottery Classes
Free Spirits at Noisy Water is an outdoor exhibition in Ruidoso Downs featuring eight larger-than-life horses. Each horse weighs between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds. The installation offers a different way to explore the theme of horses than the Futurity: here, a group of eight large figures stands outdoors; there, a race is defined by its distance and date.
The Painted Pony in Ruidoso Downs offers a different activity: the gallery provides pottery classes in wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. These are two different ways to shape clay. If you’d rather get creative yourself than view an exhibition, these classes offer a distinct option.
The Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway
The visitor center for the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway is located right next to the Hubbard Museum of the American West in Ruidoso Downs. Its exhibits introduce some of the many attractions along the byway. The focus is therefore on the scenic byway and its attractions—a different emphasis from the museum’s cultural themes and collection items.
Race Dates and Travel Planning
When planning a trip for the races, both the annual Labor Day date and the venue matter. In 2026, the Ruidoso Downs race meet was held at The Downs at Albuquerque. Check the venue for the year in question before traveling to a race; the date and location answer different planning questions.
