In Lea County, Western and ranching history meet an Art Deco theater and options for recreation and events. The highlights are tied to specific places: the Lea Theatre and the annual Fair and Rodeo are in Lovington; golf, parks, and event venues can be found in Hobbs, among other places.

Western Heritage and Cultural History

The Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame honors people from Lea County who have made outstanding contributions to rodeo, cattle ranching, or the way of life associated with ranching. Each year, it presents an award to no more than four people with roots in the county who have excelled in rodeo or contributed to the region’s cattle ranching. In doing so, the Hall of Fame recognizes both rodeo achievements and contributions to the region’s ranching tradition.

The Western Heritage Museum houses the collection of the Linam Ranch Museum. A historic Eclipse windmill stands in front of the Western Heritage Museum as a memorial to Christopher Shaun Berry. In Lovington, the Lea Theatre offers a different perspective: the Art Deco landmark opened on September 30, 1948, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Over the decades, the theater has shown first-run films and hosted civic events, concerts, and parades.

Landscape and Recreation

Lea County lies in a semiarid, windy part of the High Plains known as the Llano Estacado. A spring still flows near Monument, New Mexico.

Rockwind Community Links is a 27-hole golf facility operated by the City of Hobbs. Travelers interested in golf can include Hobbs in their plans for this course. McAdams Park in Hobbs has a lake where fishing is possible; check local rules and conditions before fishing. At Chaparral Lake, human-powered watercraft carrying passengers are permitted, subject to local rules. Swimming and wading are prohibited there. When weather conditions are suitable, gliders from the Hobbs Soaring Society may be seen in the skies over Hobbs.

Zia Park offers four restaurants and entertainment. Restaurant and entertainment options may change, so check what is currently available before visiting.
