Liberty Corner brings together local history and golf history: the Historic District, the Presbyterian Church of Liberty Corner, and the Liberty Pole Site represent different historical connections, while the USGA Golf Museum and Library adds collections on the history of golf. When choosing a destination, you can therefore distinguish between architectural and local history and the subject of golf.

Local History and the Liberty Pole

The Liberty Corner Historic District was added to the New Jersey State Register on August 16, 1991; its addition to the National Register of Historic Places followed on October 11 of the same year. The district preserves well-maintained examples of vernacular residential architecture. Most date from 1865 to 1900. The dates refer to different things: 1991 marks the two listings, while 1865 to 1900 indicates the period to which most of the preserved residential buildings belong.

The Liberty Pole Site is marked by a large glacial erratic with a bronze plaque. The original Liberty Pole was erected by patriotic colonists in the 18th century and eventually gave Liberty Corner its name. The monument and the story behind the name are therefore part of the same historical connection. French army camps 22 (to the south) and 32 (to the north) are also associated with Bullions Tavern/English Farm in Liberty Corner.

Church: Founding and Building History

The Presbyterian Church of Liberty Corner was founded on June 10, 1837, at a meeting of 21 men and women. The building history of the present sanctuary belongs to a later period: its cornerstone was laid on June 5, 1868, and it was dedicated on June 8, 1869. The church is considered the architectural centerpiece of the community and retains most of its original design features and ornamentation. The founding date and the dates associated with the present sanctuary thus mark different stages in the church’s history.

Golf History at the USGA Museum

The USGA Golf Museum and Library is located on the grounds of the United States Golf Association’s headquarters, at 77 Liberty Corner Road, Liberty Corner, New Jersey 07938. Its collections include more than 85,000 cataloged artifacts, more than 500,000 items in the Special Collections, and 750,000 photographs. These are three distinct collection groups; the collection figures may change over time. The Hall of Champions displays the names of all USGA championship winners since 1895. Objects and photographs are thus shown alongside an exhibition that records championship winners by name over this period.

The USGA Golf Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Check the opening hours before your visit, as schedules may change. An announcement published in 2017 also described the Pynes Putting Course as a nine-hole course where players could use historical golf club replicas or modern putters.

Agricultural History and Learning

English Farm on Valley Road in Liberty Corner has been in continuous use for more than two and a half centuries. This is a different time frame from the building and listing dates of the Historic District and the church: here, the focus is on the long duration of use. Sprout Scouts is a hands-on farm club for children in grades 3 to 5. Topics include healthy soil, germination, plant care, and growing food.
