Haskell, New Jersey: Park and Local History
Accommodation in Haskell
Haskell is part of the Borough of Wanaque in the U.S. state of New Jersey. For a stay, Back Beach Park and the few specifically documented historic sites are more useful than sweeping promises about hotel types or town programs.
Back Beach Park
Back Beach Park in Haskell has tennis and basketball courts, two softball/soccer fields, a tee-ball field, and a playground with a pavilion. The park offers several specific sports facilities and a playground. For visitors interested in physical activity, it is a verifiable place to visit, but not a feature of every hotel in town.
School and Church
A 1916 postcard described Haskell School as a “new school house”; the school is at the corner of Ringwood Avenue and Storms Avenue in the Haskell section of town. In the 1950s, St. Francis Church moved from its former location on Lines Ave in Wanaque to its current location in Haskell. There is a playground at Haskell School on Ringwood Avenue. Local history can also be seen in everyday buildings. The postcard describes the school in 1916; the church move took place in the 1950s. Both provide historical context, not a recommendation to visit the interiors.
Industrial History
The DuPont powder works in Haskell continued to expand after DuPont acquired Laflin and Rand in 1902; production declined after World War I, and the works closed in 1926. The former powder works explain part of Haskell’s industrial past. Since they closed in 1926, this does not indicate that they are still operating today.
When choosing accommodations, check their actual location relative to the park and your other destinations. The local information does not establish whether each facility is in use on a particular day or what amenities an accommodation offers.
