When searching for a hotel in Bay Head, it helps to consider the local landmarks by their distinct themes. The town’s history is reflected in places such as the Bay Head Historic District and the Bay Head Loop; at Twilight Lake, open space, tidal influence, and opportunities for launching watercraft take center stage. The Borough’s beaches have their own operator. Together, these points provide a concrete picture of the destination without conflating historic buildings, the lakefront, and beach operations.

Local History in Several Aspects

The Bay Head Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2006. The year marks the district’s listing; the architectural styles mentioned, by contrast, describe its surviving architecture. The district is primarily residential and covers most of the area within the municipal boundaries of the Borough of Bay Head. Many buildings in historic Bay Head have been preserved in the Shingle, Stick, and Queen Anne styles. These three named styles make the district’s architecture more specific without reducing its character to a single style. So if you are interested in architectural history, both the district as a whole and its surviving buildings are relevant.

The Bay Head Loop offers a second perspective. It was originally installed at Bay Head Junction station in 1918. The Bay Head site is still the only turning loop in New Jersey. This historic infrastructure adds to the picture of the preserved architectural styles and also shows that the town’s history is shaped by more than just buildings.

Twilight Lake and Beaches

Twilight Lake is Bay Head’s main open space. Because the Scow Ditch connects it to the Bay, the entire area is affected by tidal changes. On Lake Avenue, there are two small public docks and a sandy beach; small non-motorized watercraft such as paddleboards and kayaks can be launched there. For planning purposes, it is important to note that these facilities are specifically located on Lake Avenue, while the tidal influence affects the entire area. The Borough’s beaches are operated by the Bay Head Improvement Association (B.H.I.A.), independently of the Borough government. The Lake Avenue launch sites and the operation of the Borough’s beaches are therefore two separate points of reference: one concerns launching watercraft at Twilight Lake, and the other concerns organizational responsibility for the beaches.

Event Format and Museum Location

“Glimmer of Hope” also adds a participatory activity to the local attractions: participants personally create a floating paper lantern. Another historic point of interest, the Bay Head Historical Society Museum, is near the destination, in Point Pleasant on the border with Bay Head. It is located in the Loveland Homestead, built in 1867. This makes it easy to distinguish the Bay Head Historic District within the town from the nearby museum in Point Pleasant. The year 1867 refers to the Homestead; the museum reference describes its current use.
