Discover Flemington
Accommodation in Flemington
Flemington brings together local history, designated walking trails, train rides, and a Saturday market. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan around your interests: historic sites, a self-guided tour, trails of varying lengths, or a train ride each offer a different focus.
History at the Museum and Courthouse
The Samuel Fleming House was established in 2005 in Flemington’s first house as Hunterdon County’s local history museum. A visit therefore focuses on both the historic building and the county’s local history.
The house’s well-maintained garden, originally designed in 2007, includes a gazebo and the Carmen Grimes Memorial Garden, a carefully researched colonial herb garden. Other features include The Children's Corner, a secluded seating area by an arbor, and seasonal rose displays. The seasonal flowers give the garden different features throughout the year.
The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse and Jail in Flemington was the site of the infamous Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping Trial, known as the “Trial of the Century.” The “Flemington Raid” historic marker commemorates a different event: in December 1776, Captain John Schenck and his men attacked a British patrol led by Captain Geary between Copper Hill and Larison's Corner. Geary was killed and buried near the site of the skirmish. George Washington passed through the area in November 1780.
The marker is on Route 30 at the entrance from Ringoes to Flemington: when traveling west, it is on the right, south of the Fleming Estate silhouette sign. If you’re specifically looking for the marker, check before your visit to confirm that it is still there.
Hours and Tours
While exhibitions are on, the Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse is currently open to the public on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted. It is also open during special events. Free tours of the Historic Courthouse and Jail are available by appointment. Arrange a tour in advance and confirm the appointment details before you arrive.
Walking Trails and Historic Tour
The Historic Flemington Trail is a self-guided tour covering one square mile and four centuries of history. There are also designated one-, two-, and four-mile walking trails through the walkable downtown and scenic parks. The trail lengths provide a straightforward guide to the distance you want to cover: one mile is the shortest option, and four miles the longest, with two miles in between. This lets you include different trail lengths in your plans, while the self-guided tour offers its own approach, with a focus on history.
Train Ride and Market
The Black River & Western Railroad offers train rides departing from Flemington Station in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Black River Limited is a classic round trip between Flemington and Ringoes, New Jersey. If you plan a ride as part of your trip, this route offers a clear starting point and destination, setting it apart from the walking trails and historic sites in town.
Another specific reason to visit is the Stangl Factory Farmer's Market, held on Saturdays at 50 Stangl Road in Flemington. Together with the historic sites, trails, and train, it offers a range of options for your stay: local history, outdoor activity, a train ride, or a visit to the market.
