In New Castle, coastal areas, military history, and local institutions offer different points of interest. Great Island Common combines coastal green space with a beach; at Fort Constitution, ruins, views, and picnicking take center stage, while Fort Stark also offers a museum, a trail, and waterside activities. The New Castle Historical Society and a lighthouse known by several names are also among the area’s key landmarks. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these facets matters most for your stay.

Coastal Space at Great Island Common

Great Island Common encompasses 32 acres of coastal green space and beach. The combination makes it appealing to travelers who want to enjoy open coastal scenery and the beach during their stay. The Common has 35 picnic tables. As park facilities can change, check the current amenities before your visit. The Common therefore plays a different role from the forts: here, green space, the beach, and picnicking shape the experience, rather than military history.

Ruins and Views at Fort Constitution

At Fort Constitution, the focus is on both history and scenery. The ruins visible today are from the fort, whose renovation was completed in 1808. The year refers to the completion of the renovation, not the start of construction. Fort Constitution offers views of the Piscataqua River and the Atlantic Ocean. The grounds also serve as a casual gathering place for picnics. Fort Constitution thus offers several distinct points of interest: its historical significance, views of two bodies of water, and grounds suitable for picnicking.

Museum, Trail, and Water at Fort Stark

Fort Stark offers a different emphasis. Its museum houses military artifacts and information about the 22nd Coastal Artillery. This unit was headquartered at Fort Stark during World War II; the reference to its headquarters applies to that wartime period. An unmarked hiking trail runs through the 10-acre grounds. The fort area also has a small beach and kayak access to the ocean and Little Harbor. Check current operating conditions before setting out. Fort Stark combines military history with a museum, hiking trail, and waterside activities; Fort Constitution combines ruins, views of the Piscataqua River and the Atlantic Ocean, and opportunities for picnicking.

Local Institution and Lighthouse

The New Castle Historical Society is housed in the Old Library Museum, located on Windmill Hill in New Castle. When it comes to the lighthouse, it is useful to group its different names together: Fort Point Lighthouse is also called Portsmouth Harbor Light or New Castle Light. It is the only lighthouse in New Castle. The different names refer to the same lighthouse and help identify it despite the variations.

Different Priorities for Your Stay

The two forts offer different experiences: Fort Constitution combines ruins with views and picnicking, while Fort Stark combines military history with a museum, hiking trail, and kayak access. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you prefer scenery and picnicking or a museum and coastal activities.
