Carroll: Landscapes, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Carroll
This helps distinguish different timeframes and interests. For practical planning, the duration of a ride and seasonal or current visitor information are particularly important.
Landscapes, Lakes and Trails
A quarter of Carroll County lies within the White Mountain National Forest. Two erratics in the county are also among the largest in the world. White Lake State Park sits on the shore of White Lake, which is considered a typical glacial lake. A well-maintained footpath runs around the lake; trout fishing is also available in the park.
Echo Lake State Park offers other activities on the water: swimming and picnicking are possible there, and several hiking trails begin at the park. These include a scenic trail around the lake. If you’d like to combine a walk with other activities, the options at Echo Lake offer practical guidance, without requiring swimming or a picnic to be part of a loop.
Cultural History and Historic Estates
The historic Lucknow estate covered 6,300 acres. Its designation as a National Historic Landmark was announced in December 2024. Castle in the Clouds offers tours of the historic Lucknow Mansion, as well as its lawns and gardens. The excursion therefore focuses on the estate’s history and a tour of the mansion and its outdoor grounds.
The Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm is a historic site and working farm with exhibits, gardens and walking trails. This combination differs from a visit focused primarily on a single historic building: here, the farm, gardens and trails are also part of what’s on offer.
The Wright Museum is a nonprofit educational institution that honors the contributions and enduring legacy of Americans during the World War II era. A rotating exhibit from its vehicle collection features tanks, half-tracks, Jeeps and motorcycles. Other exhibits use toys, posters, furnishings and other everyday objects to show how ordinary Americans lived during World War II. Military vehicles and everyday items thus offer different perspectives on this period.
Rides and Practical Planning
The Conway Branch is a 21-mile trail running from Route 28 in Ossipee to West Main Street in Conway, passing several points of interest. Its length and two endpoints are useful reference points for planning a route. Trail management information may change, so check the latest details before setting out.
The Conway Scenic Railroad offers train rides of different durations. The Valley Train is an authentic, one-hour ride on a historic branch line. A 4- to 4.5-hour round trip on the Conway Scenic Railroad travels through Crawford Notch. Schedules may vary; check them before your excursion. This makes it easy to distinguish between a short train ride and a considerably longer round trip, without implying that either duration is a fixed schedule.
The Millie B takes a one-hour trip from the Wolfeboro Town Docks in Wolfeboro on Lake Winnipesaukee. Schedules and weather-related restrictions may vary. Check the details before setting out, so you can plan the boat trip accordingly.
A one-mile paved road leads to the summit of the 700-foot Cathedral Ledge. Road conditions can change, so check them before driving. At Wentworth State Park, you can make a reservation in advance because parking is limited; pets are not allowed. Check these parking details and the pet policy before your visit. The Governor Wentworth Historic Site is open for recreational use at all times, while staffing and facilities vary seasonally.
