Washoe: Between Lake Tahoe, Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Washoe
The southeastern part of Washoe County borders the northeastern shore of Lake Tahoe and meets the Sierra Nevada. The lakeshore and mountains form two distinctive geographic landmarks here. The scale of the county’s administration also gives an idea of the landscape: Washoe County manages more than 12,000 acres, including over 10,000 acres of open space and 49 parks. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding whether nature, water activities or culture will be your focus.
Landscapes and Nature Experiences
At Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, different landscapes lie side by side across 580 acres, including wetlands and dry sagebrush vegetation. The park is best known as the venue for the Great Reno Balloon Race. This connects a specific event with a landscape that includes both wet and dry habitats.
The Swan Lake Nature Study Area offers a different perspective on nature. It is designated an Important Bird Area because of its unusually diverse bird population, which includes swans. The designation puts the birdlife in the spotlight, with swans providing a vivid example of the diversity of species it recognizes. Washoe Lake State Park, in turn, offers views of the Sierra Nevada and the Carson and Virginia mountain ranges.
For a walk, Davis Creek Regional Park describes a 0.7-mile nature trail around the pond. Conditions on nearby trails can change, so check current conditions before your visit. The playa of the Black Rock Desert offers a different sense of scale: it spans about 200 square miles and is used for off-road driving, land sailing and amateur rocket launches. The Applegate Trail in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon National Conservation Area adds a historical dimension to this natural setting. Signs there point to diary entries by early emigrants.
Water Activities
The Whitewater Park is a Class II to III course for kayaks, canoes, rafts and inner tubes. It comprises 11 sequence pools over a total of 2,600 feet. The class rating and course layout offer two different points of reference: the course’s difficulty rating and its specific sequence of pools.
At Sand Harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, you can swim, kayak and scuba dive. These activities differ from those offered on the whitewater course. Seasonal access rules may apply at Sand Harbor; check the current notices before your visit. The two offerings therefore differ mainly in the type of activity: traveling along a watercourse or swimming and enjoying other lake activities.
Museums, Technology and History
More than 240 cars are on display at the National Automobile Museum, alongside authentic street scenes and sounds. Exhibits include Celebrity Automobiles, Champion Vehicles and Limited Edition Cars. The range extends from vehicles shown in staged street scenes to exhibits identified by their respective categories.
The Sparks Museum and Cultural Center cares for the historic Glendale Schoolhouse. Its outdoor train exhibit area includes a steam locomotive, a caboose with a cupola and a Pullman business car. The collection shows different parts of a train: a locomotive, a car with a cupola and a business car. At the Applegate Trail, signs point to the diary entries of early emigrants, providing a different historical perspective from the vehicles on display.
Galena Creek Regional Park has exhibits at the Galena Creek Visitor Center. In Washoe County, Historic Bowers Mansion is open seasonally on weekends and holidays for guided tours; seasonal opening dates may vary. At the Nevada Museum of Art, volunteer museum guides lead gallery tours. The Wilbur D. May Center presents the life and legacy of Wilbur D. May. Alongside vehicles and historic buildings, visitors can choose among exhibits, gallery tours and a biographical presentation as different cultural themes.
